WVU Defeats Texas 1-0 to Advance to Finals

ROUND ROCK, Texas – A first-half goal from West Virginia’s Lauren Segalla sealed the No. 4-seeded Mountaineers’ ticket to the championship round of the 2022 Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championship.

WVU forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran made an head-on shot that was deflected by Texas goalkeeper Savannah Madden in the 11th minute. Five minutes later, Texas’ Holly Ward sent one to WVU goalkeeper Kayza Massey who deflected the ball.

Segalla pushed a ball past the Texas goalkeeper in the 42nd minute to give the Mountaineers the lead. The Longhorns and the Mountaineers battled on the pitch as 11 shots were exchanged between the teams in the first half.

Texas led the two teams in shots in the second half, taking seven while holding West Virginia to only one. A scoring opportunity for Texas came in the 55th minute as Emma Regan took a shot directly to WVU’s Massey, but the ball was tipped over the crossbar. A last-minute shot attempt from Texas happened in the 90th minute but was not converted.

West Virginia advances to the championship match against the winner of the TCU/Oklahoma contest. West Virginia last went to the finals during the 2018 season where they defeated the No. 1 seed Baylor 3-0.
