Texas Sweeps Indoor Titles For Second Straight Year

AMES, Iowa – Texas swept both the men’s and women’s indoor titles for the second straight year, marking the fifth time the Longhorns have picked up both crowns at the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship.

The men’s title was decided when Texas took 11 points in the 3,000-meter race and 10 points in the 4x400 relay, as UT trailed Texas Tech by a point prior to the final races. The Longhorns scored 171 points to take the men’s team title and were followed by the Red Raiders in second with 155 points. Oklahoma (84), Iowa State (68) and Oklahoma State (63) rounded out the top five.

On the women’s side, Texas finished with 136 points and were followed by Texas Tech (124), Oklahoma State (123), Baylor (76.5) and Oklahoma (73) to close out the top five.
Iowa State’s Cailie Logue and Texas Tech’s Jacolby Shelton were the meet’s high point scorers.

Four records were set on the final day of the championship. OSU’s Alex Maier took the title in the men’s 3,000 meters with a meet record time of 7:48.73. Baylor’s Ackera Nugent set a facility record in the 60-meter hurdles, taking the medal with a time of 7.91. Texas Tech’s Rosemary Chukwuma broke the meet record in the 60-meter dash, running a time of 7.17 to take the crown.

Texas’ Jonathan Jones also set collegiate, meet and facility records in the 600-yards, winning with a time of 1:06.68. Fellow Longhorn Davicia Patterson took her second-consecutive indoor title in the 600-yards with a mark of 1:19.41.
Kansas’ Rylee Anderson picked up the women’s high jump title for the second-straight year with a mark of 1.87 meters. Oklahoma’s Vernon Turner took the win in the men’s high jump with 2.23 meters.

Texas’ Tripp Pipperi became a five-time champion in the men’s shot put, throwing a mark of 21.40 meters after tossing 21.00 in 2021. Oklahoma’s Payden Montana took the crown in the women’s shot put with a toss of 17.27 meters.

Oklahoma State’s Taylor Roe won her second-consecutive title on the one-mile run (4:33.56) and added another one in the women’s 3,000 meters (9:35.85). Texas’ Yusuf Bizimana repeated in the men’s one-mile run with a time of 3:59.85.

Shelton also repeated as 60-meter dash champion, posting a time of 6.64. The Red Raiders took medals in multiple events as Ruta Lasmane won the women’s triple jump with a mark of 13.85 meters. Gary Haasbroek won the men’s heptathlon with 5,833, placing first in every event except the 60 meter dash, which he finished fourth. Jalen Seals won the men’s triple jump, leaping 16.31 meters. Vashaun Vascianna took the gold in the men’s 60-meter hurdles (7.75) and Moad Zahafi was the winner of the men’s 1,000 meters (2:20.26).

Kansas’s Avryl Johnson was the victor in the women’s 1,000 meters. Baylor’s Howard Fields III won the men’s 400 meters (46.16) while UT’s Kennedy Simon took the women’s title with a time of 51.54.

Two more Texas women in Brooke Jaworski and Julien Alfred won the 800 meters and 200 meters, respectively. Fellow Longhorn Crayton Carrozza grabbed the tiles in the men’s 800 meters with a time of 1:47.22.

The Baylor women (Kavia Francis, Imaobong Nse Uko, Gontse Morake, Mariah Ayers) finished first in the 4x400 meter relay, with a 3:32.77 mark while the Texas men (Jon Maas, Jonathan Jones, Brian Herron, Willington Wright) posted a finish of 3:04.19 to give the Longhorns the win.

The 2022 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships are set for March 11-12 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. The selection show will take place on March 1 on NCAA.com.
