TULSA, Oklahoma — In its return to the Big 12 Conference as an affiliate member, Missouri scored 131.5 points to win the 2022 Big 12 Wrestling Championship Sunday night at the BOK Center.
The victory marks Missouri’s second Big 12 title as the Tigers were crowned Conference champions in 2012. Oklahoma finished in second place with 113 points and Iowa State followed in third with 110. Oklahoma State finished fourth with 107.5 points and Northern Iowa rounded out the top five with 100 points.
Missouri head coach Brian Smith received Coach of the Year honors, as voted on by league coaches.
After earning the Air Force Academy’s first Big 12 individual title in program history, Wyatt Hendrickson was named the 2022 Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Final Round
In a heavily anticipated heavyweight bout, Hendrickson came back from a 0-4 deficit in the first period to defeat Oklahoma State’s Luke Surber with a 16-6 major decision.
West Virginia’s top-seeded Killian Cardinale took the crown at 125 pounds, defeating UNI’s Brody Teske, the 2021 Big 12 champion, via 8-3 decision.
Oklahoma State’s Daton Fix, nationally-ranked No. 2 in the 133-pound weight class, collected his third Big 12 title, second-consecutive, after a 6-2 decision victory over Panther Kyle Biscoglia.
Northern Colorado’s three-seeded Andrew Alirez spoiled Tiger Allan Hart’s debut in a Big 12 final, earning the 141-pound title with a 6-4 decision, giving the Bears their first individual champion.
In the only Bedlam battle of the final round, OSU’s Kaden Gfeller defeated OU’s Willie McDougald in a close 2-1 decision victory to take the 149-pound championship.
Iowa State’s David Carr, reigning NCAA champion at 157 pounds, picked up his third-straight Big 12 crown with an 8-2 decision over North Dakota State’s Jared Franek.
Taking the victory at 165 pounds, Keegan O’Toole gave Missouri its first individual Big 12 title, posting a 13-7 decision against WVU’s Peyton Hall.
In the only Missouri vs. Oklahoma State matchup of the night, OSU’s Dustin Plott, the No. 1 seed in the 174-pound weight class, defeated Mizzou’s Peyton Mocco in a close 4-3 decision to garner the title.
At 184 pounds, Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen claimed his second-straight championship with a 14-3 major decision victory over Tiger Jeremiah Kent.
Wyoming’s Stephen Buchanan was the 197-pound champion with a 3-2 decision against South Dakota State’s Tanner Sloan.
Session III
OSU’s Trevor Mastrogiovanni posted a sudden victory (5-3) in the consolation bracket semifinal over Utah Valley’s Taylor LaMont to set up the match with OU’s Joey Prata, defeating the Sooner in a 4-1 decision for a third-place finish. La Mont went on to place fifth with a 19-6 major decision against UNC’s Jace Koelzer and Tiger Noah Surtin picked up a sudden victory (5-3) versus ISU’s Kysen Terukina in the seventh-place bout.
Cyclone Ramazan Attasaouv earned the third-place spot at 133-pounds with an 8-5 decision against Air Force’s Sidney Flores. Wolverine Haiden Drury finished fifth with a 2-1 decision over OU’s Tony Madrigal and MIzzou’s Connor Brown took seventh with a 5:53 pin of SDSU’s Gabriel Tagg.
Jackrabbit Clay Carlson was the third-place finisher in the 141-pound weight class with a 7-5 decision against Bison Dylan Droegemueller. Cyclone Ian Parker finished fifth after an 8-7 decision against Oklahoma’s Jacob Butler and Oklahoma State’s Carter Young defeated UVU’s Ty Smith for a seventh-place finish.
Northern Iowa’s Colin Realbuto won third place with an 8-6 decision over ISU’s Jarrett Degan at 149-pounds while Tiger Josh Edmond placed fifth after a 17-8 major decision against Falcon Dylan Martinez. NDSU’s Gaven Sax was the seventh-place finisher with a 12-5 decision over WVU’s Jeff Boyd.
Wyoming’s Jacob Wright won third place at 157 pounds defeating OU’s Justin Thomas in a 6-5 tiebreaker. Missouri’s Jarrett Jacques took a sudden victory (3-1) against UNI’s Derek Holschlag for fifth place and WVU’s Alex Hornfeck finished seventh with an 8-2 decision over SDSU’s Kenny O’Neil.
At 165, Panther Austin Yant was the bronze medalist with a 5-4 decision over NDSU’s Luke Weber. Sooner Joe Grello collected fifth place with a 6-2 decision against Cyclone Isaac Judge and Jackrabbit Tanner Cook posted a 2:25 fall over UNC’s Nick Knutson to take seventh.
In the 174 pound weight class, Oklahoma’s Anthony Mantanona finished third with a 6-3 decision against SDSU’s Cade DeVos. Wyoming’s Hayden Hastings was the fifth-place finisher due to a medical forfeit while ISU’s Joel Devine took seventh, defeating West Virginia’s Dennis Robin. Air Force’s Sam Wolf picked up a ninth place finish with a major decision win over NDSU’s Riley Habisch.
At 184 pounds, Iowa State’s Marcus Coleman picked up a 19-6 major decision over OU’s Keegan Moore to finish third. Oklahoma State’s Dakota Geer was the fifth-place finisher, defeating NDSU’s Deanthony Parker via a 13-10 decision and Wyoming’s Tate Samuelson posted a 1:40 pin of WVU’s Anthony Carman in the seventh-place bout.
Missouri’s Rocky and Zach Elam were the third-place finishers in the 197-pound and heavyweight classes, respectively. Rocky took down OU’s Jake Woodley in a 6-1 decision while Zach posted a 6-2 decision over ISU’s Sam Schuyler.
Cyclone Yonger Bastida was the fifth-place finisher at 197 pounds due to a medical forfeit and Utah Valley’s Evan Bockman took seventh after a 7-4 decision against UNC’s Alan Clothier. Jackrabbit AJ Nevills collected the fifth-place spot in the heavyweight class, defeating OU’s Josh Heindselman via a 5-4 tiebreaker while West Virginia’s Michael Wolfgram took seventh with a 3-1 decision over NDSU’s Brandon Metz.
