BU’s Nnamdi and KU’s Emilianov Earn Outdoor Awards

IRVING, Texas — Baylor freshman Chinecherem “Zaza” Prosper Nnamdi and Kansas senior Alexandra Emilianov were named Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week after taking gold in their respective events in Baylor’s Michael Johnson Invitational.

Nnamdi retook the national lead in the javelin throw with a record-setting mark of 265 feet, 11 inches. The freshman had been bumped out of the top spot on Friday night by Virginia’s Ethan Dabbs, took the NCAA lead by over two feet Saturday, setting a program and stadium record with his throw. Nnamdi’s previous throw had held the No. 1 spot since the 2022 Texas Relays. Nnamdi’s new mark of 256-11 places him as the No.15 all-time thrower in Division I competition, according to the USTFCCCA’s all-time list. The Awka, Nigeria native is currently 12th in the world standings.

Meanwhile Emilianov launched a mark of 198 feet, 6 inches in the discus competition to earn the second-best mark in the NCAA. The throw was the second-furthest in Kansas history behind only her own school record of 211 feet and 3 inches. The Chisinau, Moldova native sits 24th in the world standings after her performance last weekend.
