LUBBOCK, Texas — The University of Texas earned both the men’s and women’s titles at the 2022 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Lubbock on Sunday. It marked the fifth year that Texas has swept both the indoor and outdoor championships while it occurred for the sixth time in Conference history.
The Longhorn men totaled 161 points for their second consecutive title. Oklahoma followed with 127 points while Texas Tech rounded out the top-3 with 118 points. Baylor placed fourth with 86 points and Kansas finished fifth with 74.
Oklahoma State (72), Iowa State (67), Kansas State (56) and TCU (49) rounded out the remainder of the men’s team standings.
The UT women picked up their third-straight championship with 172.5 points. Texas Tech finished second with 162 points and Oklahoma followed in third with 101.5. The Baylor women also finished fourth with 92 points and Iowa State wrapped up the top-5 with 73 points.
Oklahoma State (55), Kansas (53), Kansas State (41), West Virginia (38) and TCU (29) rounded out the women’s team standings.
Texas senior Micaiah Harris and Oklahoma’s Lauren Jones were named the meet’s high point scorers. Jones picked up the gold in the women’s hammer throw on Friday. Harris earned titles in both the men’s 100 meters (9.93) and the 200 meters (19.72).
Iowa State sophomore Dana Feyen grabbed the gold in the women’s 5,000 meters with a time of 16:27.62. In the Men’s 5,000 meters, Oklahoma State sophomore Alex Maier ran a 14:04.74 to take the crown.
Kansas senior Alexandra Emilianov became the women’s discus champion with a throw of 60.48 meters while TCU sophomore Devon Roberson won the title in the men’s discus throw, launching a mark of 57.36 meters.
Texas Tech’s Sydney Sapp took first in the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.89 meters. Kansas junior Zach Bradford earned another Big 12 title in the men’s pole vault with a mark of 5.51 meters.
Texas’ 4x100-meter relay squad continued to make history as Julien Alfred, Rhasidat Adeleke, Kevona Davis and Kynnedy Flannel ran a meet record 42.35 to take the gold.
TCU won the men’s 4x100-meter relay with Bryson Stubblefield, Tinitenda Matiyenga, Kundai Maguranyanga and Robert Gregory running a 38.50, which was also a meet record.
Oklahoma State swept the 1,500 meters with Taylor Roe taking the gold in the women’s race with a time of 4:17.00 and Fouad Messaoudi winning the men’s race with a 3:42.00, two seconds away from the record.
TTU’s Demisha Roswell won the title in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a meet record time of 12.44. Fellow Red Raider Maliek Kendall ran a 13.45 to win the men’s 110-meter hurdles.
Texas Tech added another individual medal with Ruth Usoro’s win in the women’s triple jump as the senior posted a mark of 13.94 to take the gold. In the men’s triple jump, it took TCU senior Chengetayi Mapaya one leap of 16.84 meters to earn the crown.
The Longhorns continued to set the tone on the track as Stacey Ann Williams ran a 50.21 to win the women’s 400 meters and Alfred followed with a win in the 100 meters, running a 10.80. Flannel then added another win for the Longhorn women with a meet record 22.23 in the 200 meters.
Meanwhile UT junior Jonathan Jones set another meet record running a 44.43 in the men’s 400 meters. Sandwiched in between Harris’ wins in the 100 and 200 meters, Yusuf Bizimana took gold in the men’s 800-meter race with a time of 1:48.55.
Baylor picked up hardware of its own. Senior Aaliyah Miller beat her own 2018 meet record in the women’s 800 meters by .10 seconds, running a 2:03.31 to finish first.
The Bears then swept the 400-meter hurdles and the 4x400-meter relays. Sophomore Gontse Morake picked up the title in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.19 while freshman Nathanial Ezekial won the men’s event with a meet record time of 48.42.
With another meet record, Mariah Ayers, Kavia Francis, Morake and Imaobong Nse Uko took the gold in the women’s 4x4 with a time of 3:26.92. The Baylor men wrapped up competition as Hasani Barr, Matthew Moorer, Jayson Baldridge and Dillon Bedell ran a 3:02.73 to win the men’s 4x4.
