UC, UT, TTU and WVU Share Big 12 Soccer Week 8 Awards

Texas’ Lexi Missimo (Offensive) and Texas Tech’s Sam Courtwright (Freshman) garnered their third Big 12 Soccer weekly awards this season. West Virginia’s Julianne Vallerand (defensive) and Kayza Massey (co-goalkeeper) along with Cincinnati’s Anna Rexford (co-goalkeeper) claimed their first weekly accolade of the season as well as the first for their teams.

Missimo registered the most points (6) and goals (3) in the Conference last week. The sport management student netted two goals in the Longhorns’ 3-1 win at UCF, which marked her fourth brace of the season. The two goals not only placed her as the first Longhorn to score 15 goals and have 15 assists in a single season, but also set the program record for points in a season (50). She then converted her fifth penalty kick of the year in the 2-1 win over Iowa State. Missimo now has 17 goals this season and is tied for UT’s program record single-season goals.

Courtwright claimed her second consecutive Freshman of the Week honor after helping Texas Tech take the lead in the Conference standings. In a tough matchup against then-No. 7 BYU, she scored TTU’s first goal in the 2-2 draw. It was her second goal in back-to-back matches. Against TCU, the midfielder took one of the three shots on goal for Tech. Logging 1,051 minutes of action on the pitch, the freshman has registered 14 points in 15 contests.

Vallerand helped WVU record two shutouts last week, including beating Oklahoma 4-0 and a 1-0 win over Oklahoma State. The Mountaineers held both teams to a combined seven shots on goal. The Terrebonne, Quebec native and MBA student recorded a team save as she headed out a ball that was on target from the Cowgirls.

Massey collected her third career goalkeeper weekly honor after her performance during Week 8. The three-time All-Big 12 Academic Team selection recorded six saves against OU and OSU, the Conference’s third and fourth-ranked teams in shots on goal per game. Voted the 2022 Co-Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Year, Massey has registered seven shutouts this season.

Rexford, the first Bearcat to be named a Big 12 Soccer Player of the Week, marked her third and fourth shutouts of the season after UC posted a 1-0 win over Oklahoma State and a 0-0 draw with Oklahoma. Facing an OSU team that averaged 20 shots per game, Cincinnati held the Cowgirls to five total shots. The exercise major recorded three saves against OSU before grabbing one against OU. Rexford has the fourth-best goals-against average (0.86) during league play.
