BYU, UH, TCU & WVU Share Weekly Swimming & Diving Honors

TCU’s Geremia Freri (co-swimmer) and Oliver Cazaly (diver) earned two of the Big 12 Swimming and Diving awards while BYU’s Jordan Tiffany (newcomer) and West Virginia’s Danny Berlitz (co-swimmer) also received recognition. TCU also garnered two awards on the women’s side with Olivia Rhodes (co-swimmer) and Nina Vadovicova (newcomer) being joined by BYU’s Emma Marusakova (co-swimmer) and Houston’s Chase Farris (diver).

Freri swept his three individual events in TCU’s home opener against BYU, winning the 200 IM (1:49.30), 400 IM (3:52.44) and 1000 free (9:16.55). The junior has now earned nine conference weekly awards (fifth swimmer of the week).  It is his first of the 2023 season.

Berlitz took home three first-place finishes in the 200 breast (2:01.37), 200 free (1:39.17) and 400 IM (3:57.75). The integrated studies major accounted for three of the four event wins for the Mountaineers in their competition against Penn State. It is his first weekly Conference award since joining WVU in 2022.

Marusakova accumulated a team-high 21 points with wins in the 100 fly (54.75) and 200 IM (2:03.30). The psychology major cut five seconds off her previous personal record in the 200 IM, to surpass Lilian Moore for the 10th best performance in the event in BYU program history. It is her first career Conference award.

Rhodes finished atop the results board in two individual events (50 free, 100 free) while also helping the Horned Frogs to two additional event wins in the 200 free and 400 free relays. The junior recorded a time of 22.78 in the 50 free and 50.31 in the 100 free while clocking splits of 22.41 and 49.77 in the 200 free and 400 free relays, respectively. It is the Allied Health Sciences major’s second Conference award this season and fourth in her career.

Cazaly ended the meet with two top-place results in the 1-meter (324.10) and 3-meter (393.85) while adding a second-place finish on platform (267.35). The kinesiology major’s performance earned him zone cuts in both springboard events and garnered his first career weekly award. His 3-meter score set a personal-record and solidified him as the third-highest score in the TCU record book.

Farris earned an NCAA Zone Cut in platform with a score of 247.2 in her first competition of the season in the event. Her score of 308.30 in the 1-meter and 310.2 score in the 3-meter helped the 5th year finish as the top individual performer of the Houston Diving Invitational. She is the first UH athlete to secure a weekly Big 12 swimming and diving award in the Cougars’ debut season in the Conference.

Tiffany highlighted his meet with a program record in the 100 fly in a time of 45.86, nearly two seconds faster than the runner-up. The record time is good for second-fastest in the NCAA this season. The human resources major finished first in the 100 fly and added gold medals in the 400 medley relay (3:12.36) and 400 free relay (2:57.37) in addition to two runner-up finishes in the 200 medley relay (1:27.88) and 50 free (20.37). This is Tiffany’s second award this season.

Vadovicova set program records and earned NCAA B Cut times in the 100 and 200 breast in the Horned Frogs’ dual meet against BYU. The kinesiology major finished with three individual wins (100 breast, 200 breast, 400 IM) and contributed on two relays that finished atop the results board (200 medley, 400 medley). It is the freshman’s second Conference award in her first season in Fort Worth.
