AMES, Iowa – Oklahoma State and BYU took home the 2023 Big 12 Cross Country Championship team titles Saturday morning in Ames, Iowa at the Iowa State Cross Country Course. The Cowboys won their fourth consecutive men’s team title and 13
th overall while the Cougars won their first women’s title as a member of the Conference.
The Cowboys started the day with the men’s title as they finished with 25 points, led by freshman Brian Musau at No. 1 (22:46.6), the 2022 Big 12 champion Alex Maier at No. 2 (22:49.1) and sophomore Fouad Messaoudi at No. 5 (23:00.4). The OSU men took three of the top-five finishes and five of the top nine as Will Muirhead came in at eighth (23:04.3) followed by Jonas Price at ninth (23:06.9).
In its Big 12 Cross Country Championship debut, BYU finished runner-up with 55 points followed by Texas at third with 70 points. Junior Creed Thompson led the Cougars with a third-place finish in a time of 22:54.1 followed by teammate Joey Nokes close behind at No. 6 (23:01.9). Texas’ Devin Hart (No. 4 in 22:57.5) and Rodger Rivera (No. 10 in 23:10.6) and Iowa State’s Said Mechaal (No. 7) rounded out the top-10 individual finishers.
On the women’s side, BYU secured the women’s title with 35 points as four runners finished in the top-eight and five in the top 10. Lexy Halladay-Lowry led the Cougars with a fourth-place finish (19:44.3) followed by Jenna Hutchins at No. 6 (19:54.5), Carmen Alder at No. 7 (19:57.2), Aubrey Frentheway at No. 8 (19:58.0) and Riley Chamberlain at No. 10 (20:10.4).
Taylor Roe helped Oklahoma State to a runner-up team finish (39 points) as she won her first Big 12 Championship individual title with a time of 19:35.4 after third-place and second-place finishes in 2021 and 2022. OSU teammates Billah Jepkirui (19:42.1) and Molly Born (19:45.1) finished No. 2 and No. 5, respectively. Texas Tech’s Juliet Cherubet (19:43.4) and Iowa State’s Madelynn Hill (20:04.6) completed the top 10 individual standings at third and ninth, respectively. Iowa State rounded out the top-three team finishes with 70 points.
