rd-minute goal lifted Cincinnati over Baylor 3-2 in the first round of the 2023 Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championship at the Round Rock Multipurpose Center in Round Rock, Texas.
After facing a lightning delay during pregame, Cincinnati struck early as midfielder Fran Stables scored a goal in the 11
th minute. The two teams entered halftime only separated by one shot attempt with UC holding a 6-5 advantage.
The Bearcats went up 2-0 in the 50
th minute when freshman Emma Gioffre kicked in her second goal of the season.
Hannah Augustyn’s goal in the 69
th minute put Baylor on the scoreboard. The Bears weren’t done yet as Ashley Merrill scored the equalizer with a header off a corner kick from teammate Tyler Isgrig in the 83
rd minute. Isgrig was credited an assist in each goal scored by Baylor on Saturday.
Less than a minute later, UC’s Kendall Battle scored the game-winning goal for the Bearcats. Baylor’s latest attack would happen in the 88
th minute but was deflected over the goal by Cincinnati’s goalkeeper Anna Rexford.
No. 9-seeded Cincinnati will face the No. 1 seed Texas Tech on Monday at 2:00 p.m. CT/3 p.m. ET.
