Texas Advances to Semifinals with a 3-1 Win over West Virginia

AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 4 seeded Texas Longhorns netted three goals in the first half to defeat No. 5 seeded West Virginia in the quarterfinal match of the 2023 Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championship. Monday’s matches were relocated to the Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field on the University of Texas campus due to forecasted inclement weather.

UT’s Lexi Missimo recorded a brace during the match, scoring in the ninth and converting a penalty kick in the 39th minute. Trinity Byars scored the Longhorns’ (13-4-2) second goal in the 14th minute.

Held scoreless at the half, West Virginia (7-8-4) had four shots to UT’s eight. The Mountaineers were evenly matched in corner kicks with the Longhorns during the first 45 minutes as each team had three.

WVU’s Dilary Heredia-Beltran recorded the Mountaineers’ only goal in the second half at the 57-minute mark. It was her third goal of the season.  
 The Mountaineers held Texas to three shots on goal in the second half after the Longhorns had landed five on target in the first 45 minutes. WVU’s Kayza Massey had five saves during the match while UT’s Mia Justus recorded one in the Longhorns’ impressive defensive effort.

Texas outshot West Virginia, 16-9, including 8-2 in shots on goal. UT earned seven corner kicks, compared to five for the Mountaineers.

Texas will face the winner of Monday afternoon’s match between No. 9 seed Cincinnati and No. 1 seed Texas Tech.
