2023 All-Big 12 Volleyball Awards Revealed

Texas’ Madisen Skinner (Player), Kansas’ Camryn Turner (Setter) and Ray Bechard (Coach) along with Houston’s Kate Georgiades (Libero) and Iowa State’s Nayeli Gonzalez (Freshman) secured individual accolades for the 2023 All-Big 12 volleyball honors. Skinner was a unanimous selection. The awards were selected by the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their institution.

Skinner led the league in kills per set (4.64) and points per set during the season (5.31). It marks the fourth consecutive season a Longhorn has been bestowed with the honor, the sixth time in the last seven, and the 13th in the last 15th years. The Health and Society major led a UT team that went 17-1 in league play while winning its seventh straight league title. Skinner won two Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week awards during the season while guiding a UT offense that finished first in the Big 12 in hitting percentage (.279). Her 22 kills against Kansas in a three-set match tied for the most by a Conference player this season. The Longhorns are 22-4 overall and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship.

Turner finished atop the Conference leaderboard in assists per set (10.71). She is the first Jayhawk to win Setter of the Year since Ainise Havili won the award three times in a row from 2015-17. The native of Topeka, Kansas was selected as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week once during the season and helped KU finish first in the league with 13.03 assists per set and 14.02 kills per set.

Georgiades finished second in digs per set (4.51) among league players during the season while steering Houston to 11 league wins in its debut Big 12 season. Georgiades had the second-highest total of digs in a three-set match in a Conference contest this year with 22 against TCU on Nov. 15. Georgiades won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week once while anchoring a Houston defense that ranked third in opponent hitting percentage (.175) among Big 12 teams this season. The Fitness and Sport major previously won the American Athletic Conference’s Libero of the Year in 2021 and 2022.

Gonzalez averaged 3.33 kills per set and 2.08 digs per set in her rookie campaign. Her 31 kills on Nov. 10 against Kansas were the second most by a player in a Big 12 match this season. She won four Big 12 Rookie of the Week titles during the season, the second ISU player in program history to procure the honor four times. Gonzalez is the first Cyclone to win Freshman of the Year since Jess Schaben in 2015 and the third all-time.

Bechard led Kansas to a second-place finish with a 14-4 record in league play. It was KU’s first season with at least 14 league wins since 2016, which was also the last season the Jayhawks finished in the top two of the Big 12 standings. This is his fifth Big 12 Coach of the Year honor, with the last four coming in 2012-13 and 2015-16. He is one of only two coaches to win the honor at least five times. Bechard ranks second all-time with 223 wins in Big 12 matches. He has the Jayhawks in the NCAA Tournament for the 12th season, all under his guidance.

Fourteen student-athletes were named to the All-Big 12 First Team while 10 were selected to the Second Team. Six freshmen were chosen to the All-Big 12 Rookie Team. A full list of honorees can be found below.
