Texas Wins 2023 Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championship

ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Texas Longhorns claimed the program’s third Big 12 Soccer Championship title after defeating BYU 3-1 on Saturday evening. It marked the first postseason title for UT since 2007.

The Big 12’s leading scorer, Lexi Missimo, netted the first goal within the first two minutes of kickoff. She was assisted by teammates Ashlyn Miller and Trinity Byars.

BYU’s Brecken Mozingo followed with her own goal in the eighth minute to tie the score. The goal marked the 11th this season for the senior and the 69th for the nation’s top scoring team.

Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the half in a defensive battle that had the teams evenly matched in shots (6) and fouls (3).

In the final period, a foul in the 54th minute would put Texas up 2-1 after a converted penalty kick from Missimo. Holly Ward scored the final goal for the Longhorns in the 76th minute of the contest.

BYU’s final goal attempt came three minutes later as a header from Mozingo was caught during a diving save from UT goalkeeper Mia Justus.

Missimo was announced as the Most Outstanding Offensive Player while Justus earned Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

Both teams will wait until Monday to find out their fate for this season’s NCAA Tournament. The Selection Show will air on NCAA.com at 3 p.m. CT/2 p.m. MT.

The All-Tournament Team will be announced Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
