KU’s Moore and OSU’s Maxwell Acquire Season’s Opening Softball Accolades

Kansas’ Lyric Moore (Player) and Oklahoma State’s Kelly Maxwell (Pitcher) earned the first Big 12 softball weekly awards of 2023. Moore guided the Jayhawks to a winning record at the Candrea Classic while Maxwell helped the Cowgirls to three wins at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Mexico.

Moore is tied for the most home runs in the league, fourth in the country, after hitting three in five games, including the junior’s first career multi-home-run (2) game in a 9-8 victory over Long Beach State. The Mountain House, California native drove in nine runs with a slugging percentage of 1.133 and an OPS of 1.604, all three ranking second in the league. The catcher’s 17 total bases were the most by any league player and rank 13th nationally. Moore is Kansas’ first Player of the Week since Jennifer Marwitz in 2019.

The reigning 2022 Co-Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and unanimous First Team All-American, Maxwell picked up in 2023 right where she left off a year ago. As the starter in OSU’s season opener, the redshirt senior struck out 15 batters en route to a complete game two-hit shutout of No. 24 Oregon. The two-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 member closed the weekend with eight strikeouts in six scoreless innings against Ole Miss. She ended up atop the Conference leaderboard in ERA (0.00), fewest hits allowed (4), innings pitched (13.0), strikeouts (23) and opposing batting average (.100). Her strikeouts rank eighth nationally. This is Maxwell’s fifth weekly honor in her career, including four times last season and once in 2020. The Friendswood, Texas native was also named D1Softball's Pitcher of the Week.
