ISU’s Joens, Fritz Sweep Big 12 WBB Weekly Awards

Iowa State swept the Big 12’s weekly women’s basketball awards for games ending February 19, as Ashley Joens (player) and Denae Fritz (freshman) were selected for honors.
 
Joens averaged 25.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals as she led the Cyclones to wins over No. 17 Texas and Baylor. The Iowa City, Iowa native had a game-high 24 points with eight rebounds and a pair of steals in ISU’s 66-61 win over Texas on Monday. She added a double-double Saturday at Baylor, scoring 27 points with 11 rebounds and four assists in the 81-77 double-overtime win. In the game, she passed Andrea Riley (Oklahoma State) for second on the Big 12’s all-time career scoring list, increasing her total to 2,860 points. It is Joens’ 13th career Player of the Week selection, the second-most in Big 12 history, behind Brittney Griner (Baylor).
 
Fritz averaged 11.0 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 55.6% from beyond the arc. In the win against Texas, she hit the game-icing 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining, giving her 10 points in the game to go along with seven rebounds. The Maryville, Tennessee native played a career-high 45 minutes in the double-overtime win at Baylor, tying her career-high with three 3-pointers, scoring 12 points and again adding seven rebounds. It is the second Freshman of the Week honor for Fritz.
