AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas men and women secured team titles at the 2023 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. The Longhorn men earned their 27
th title to remain the only team to win the men’s championship since the inception of the Conference while the women earned their 21
st title and 11
th consecutive trophy.
In the men’s standings, Texas concluded with 1,060 points followed by TCU at second with 847 points and West Virginia in third with 755 points. On the women’s side, Texas surpassed 1,000 points for the sixth consecutive year (1,105) followed by Iowa State in second (564.5), TCU in third (555.5), West Virginia in fourth (540) and Kansas in fifth (515). It is Iowa State’s highest finish in the women’s standings since 2015 and the fourth consecutive year TCU’s women finished third.
The Longhorns won all but two events throughout the Championship while setting seven Big 12 Championship meet records and three all-time Conference records.
Texas swept the “of the meet awards” starting with Carson Foster who earned Men’s Swimmer of the Meet for the second-consecutive year after three first-place finishes (200 IM, 400 IM, 200 back). Kelly Pash secured Women’s Swimmer of the Meet after her own three first-place finishes (200 IM, 400 IM, 100 free). Noah Duperre was named Men’s Diver of the Meet after finishing with a Big 12 title in Men’s Platform while Hailey Hernandez earned Women’s Diver of the Meet after her efforts in the 1-meter and 3-meter. Will Chan (men’s) and Lydia Jacoby (women’s) obtained the Swimming Newcomer of the Meet honors.
Nick Harris (men’s) and Sarah Carruthers (women’s) garnered the Conference’s first Big 12 Diving Newcomer of the Meet honors after the award was added beginning with this season. Harris picked up two top-four finishes in the 1-meter and 3-meter with scores of 443.9 and 387.25, respectively, while Carruthers collected a pair of third-place finishes in the 3-meter (363.85) and platform (308.25).
The top four individuals in each event were awarded All-Big 12 first team designation. The fifth-eighth place finishers are All-Big 12 second team.
To kick off Saturday’s events, Olivia Bray broke the 200 back Big 12 Championship meet record that she set in 2022, this year with a time of 1:50.09. Carson Foster won his third 2023 Big 12 title as he three-peated in the 200 back (1:38.87).
Kelly Pash defended her crown in the 100 free as she finished in a time of 47.68 to win her third gold medal of the meet. On the men’s side, Daniel Krueger became the first swimmer in Conference history to win the 100 free (42.12) five times, breaking a tie with former Longhorn Jimmy Feigen (2009-12).
Erica Sullivan won her second-consecutive title in the 1650 free (15:49.16) to lead Texas to a sweep of the top-3 in the event while David Johnston completed the three-peat on the men’s side in 14:37.30.
In the 200 breast, Lydia Jacoby set her second U.S. Age Group (17-18) Record with a time of 2:04.32, the third-fastest in the country this year.
Caspar Corbeau then attained his fourth-straight Big 12 title in the 200 breast to join former Longhorns Will Licon (2014-17) and Brendan Hansen (2001-04) as the only swimmers in Conference history to do so.
Emma Sticklen earned back-to-back Big 12 gold medals in the 200 fly as she improved on her 2022 Championship winning time by 0.71 seconds (1:52.11). Sam Artmann took back the 200 fly title 1:42.63 after West Virginia earned the gold in 2022.
Janie Boyle finished the women’s diving events with the gold on platform (363.10) while Noah Duperre completed the Texas sweep in the event with a score of 394.80.
The Texas women (Kelly Pash, Olivia Bray, Ava Longi, Kyla Leibel) concluded their week with a meet-record of 3:11.29 in the 400 free relay while the Texas men (Daniel Krueger, Peter Larson, Luke Hobson, Carson Foster) won the men’s side for the 12
th consecutive year (2:49.26).
