Texas’ Alfred and Texas Tech’s Jones Awarded Weekly Accolade

Sprinters Julien Alfred (UT) and Terrence Jones (TTU) were named Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, announced by the Conference on Wednesday. The pair earned their second recognition during the 2023 season after record-setting performances at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational.

Alfred garnered a first-place finish as she clocked a personal best of 21.91 in the 200-meter run, which is the second-fastest time in collegiate history. The time also sits atop this season’s world outdoor rankings.  The St. Lucia native then topped a Texas program and the NCAA’s fastest all-conditions record in the 100-meters (wind-aided 10.72). She was named the USTFCCCA Division I Women's National Athlete of the Week on Monday, the fourth time she has received the honor during the 2023 indoor and outdoor track seasons.

Jones ran the fastest time in the world in the 100-meters, crossing the finish line at 9.91 seconds. He also anchored Tech’s 4x100 team that placed third overall (second collegiately) with a time of 38.60 seconds. The team recorded the third-fastest time in program history.
