Texas and Texas Tech Crowned Big 12 Outdoor Champions

NORMAN, Okla. – The Texas women claimed their fourth-straight Big 12 Outdoor Championship while the Texas Tech men dominated Sunday afternoon to win the men’s team title. The 2023 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship was hosted by the University of Oklahoma at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex.

Texas garnered six first-place finishes on Sunday to lead the women’s standings with 197 points, the second-highest team score recorded in women’s Big 12 history, while Oklahoma followed with 127 points. Iowa State rounded out the top three with 107.5 points.

Texas Tech dominated on the men’s side taking the gold medal in eight of Sunday’s 13 events, registering a Big 12 record-high 179 points to sweep both men’s Big 12 Track and Field Championships in 2023. It marked the third time the Red Raiders have taken the indoor and outdoor championships in the same year. Texas (125 points) and Kansas (117 points) placed within the top three on the men’s side.

UT’s Julien Alfred and TTU’s Courtney Lindsey captured the High Point Award as both amassed 22.5 points, winning the 200-meters and 100-meters as well as being members of the 4x100 Big 12 champion relays.

In the finals on Sunday, six Big 12 records were rewritten. The Longhorn women ran the 4x100 meter relay in 41.89 seconds which replaces the NCAA’s best all-time mark (42.00) set by the team a month ago. Malin Smith (discus throw, 56.41), Demisha Roswell (100-meter hurdles, 13.02) and Sylvia Schulz (400-meter hurdles, 56.32) claimed individual conference championships for the Red Raider women. Kansas’ Rylee Anderson won her second Big 12 title in the high jump (1.83 meters) while Iowa State’s Cailie Logue won her second championship of the weekend in the 5,000-meter run (15:54.60). Oklahoma State’s Billah Jepkirui (1,500-meters, 4:15.74) and Gabija Galvydyte (800-meters, 2:03.66) were Cowgirls who garnered Big 12 titles on Sunday.
