Powerful Pitching Performances Propel Wildcats Past Longhorns

ARLINGTON, Texas - Fifth-seeded Kansas State (34-23) eliminated top-seeded Texas (38-20) from the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship Thursday morning with a 6-0 win at Globe Life Field. K-State advances to Friday at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship for the third straight season.

The Wildcats scored in the first inning as Dom Hughes brought home Brendan Jones with a single down the right-field line to take an early one-run lead.

Kansas State scratched five more runs on the board at the top of the seventh inning. Texas reliever David Shaw walked in Jones with the bases loaded, scoring senior Cole Johnson.

Another pitching change saw senior Cash Rugely single to center field, bringing home Johnson. One more Wildcat run came home on a bases-loaded walk before Shaw was relieved by junior RHP Charlie Hurley. A two-RBI double off junior Nick Goodwin’s bat scored Rugely and Jones to extend the Wildcat lead to 6-0.

UT junior outfielder Dylan Campbell went 1-for-3, extending his hitting streak to 35 games, equaling Ty Wright’s (Oklahoma State) Big 12 record set in 2007.

Ty Ruhl (4-4) collected the win for K-State as he struck out four batters and allowed one hit through five innings pitched. Ruhl carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning.

Tyson Neighbors was credited with his 11th save on the season, striking out eight batters and one hit through four innings pitched.

Lebarron Johnson Jr. (7-3) was credited with the loss after starting for the Longhorns. He struck out two batters while allowing eight hits and two runs through six innings pitched.
