ASU, UC & TCU Garner Big 12 Volleyball Awards for Second Week of Conference Play

TCU’s Melanie Parra (offensive), Arizona State’s Mary Shroll (defensive) and Cincinnati’s Faith Frame (rookie) earned weekly league recognition for their efforts during the second week of Big 12 action.

Parra led the Conference with 5.83 points per set and 5.22 kills per set during the week. The outside hitter from Sinaloa, Mexico helped the Horned Frogs pick up a road win over Houston and a home victory against then-No. 14 Baylor in front of the second-largest crowd in TCU history (4,094). The senior recorded double-doubles in both matches while averaging 2.89 digs per set and adding a career-high six blocks against the Cougars. This is her fourth Offensive Player of the Week honor this season, just two away from tying the Conference’s single-season record.

Shroll captured her second weekly accolade of the season after leading the league with 5.71 digs per set in week six. In the four-set win over Utah, the Tempe, Arizona native notched a match-high 23 digs before adding 17 digs in a sweep of then-No. 20 BYU. Shroll has had 18 straight matches with double-digit digs and has helped the Sun Devils climb to No. 13 in the AVCA/TARAFLEX poll, their highest rank under head coach JJ Van Niel.

Frame averaged 4.29 digs per set, tied for the seventh highest among Big 12 players, during a week in which Cincinnati swept UCF and played Iowa State to four sets. The freshman from Gretna, Nebraska posted a match-high 17 digs in UC’s sweep of the Knights on the way to collecting her second Rookie of the Week honor this season.
