BYU led the Big 12 with three swimming and diving weekly awards in the fifth week of the season as Tanner Nelson (men’s swimmer), Max Kleinman (men’s newcomer) and Mackenzie Miller Lung (women’s swimmer) all collected their first career Conference weekly awards. Houston’s Lottie Cullen (women’s newcomer), TCU’s Anna Kwong (women’s diver) and Utah’s Elias Petersen (men’s diver) took home the remaining awards.
Nelson capped his weekend by breaking his own pool record in the 200 free with a time of 1:36.18. The sophomore from South Jordan, Utah added another gold in the 200 back by clocking the 10
th fastest time in program history (1:47.26) before ending his weekend with the top time in the 200 IM (1:47.36). He has won seven individual events through the first three meets of the season in his first collegiate competitions since the 2021-22 season.
Lung contributed to three event wins as BYU took on UNLV. The junior swept the breaststroke events as she clocked times of 1:00.99 in the 100 and 2:13.09 in the 200. She also helped the Cougars to a gold medal in the 200 medley relay with a 27.20 split (1:40.25 relay).
Petersen garnered the first Big 12 weekly swimming and diving award for Utah as he swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events against UNLV. The junior from Malmo, Sweden finished with a score of 393.15, within one point of breaking the program record. He added a score of 376.73 on the 3-meter to complete the sweep.
Kwong added a second Conference weekly award after setting a personal best on the season with a score of 334.05 on the 1-meter. The score finished as the top performance by a 27-point margin as well as a zone cut, as she surpassed the 300-point plateau for the second consecutive meet. She added another personal-best for the season with a 341.75 performance on the 3-meter to finish runner-up and help the Horned Frogs to team wins over SMU and Arkansas.
Kleinman recorded the fifth-fastest 100 fly performance in program history (47.04) and the sixth-fastest time in BYU history in the 100 back (47.78). The freshman then aided BYU to a runner-up finish in the 400 free relay as he set a pool record 100 free split of 43.74.
Cullen highlighted her weekend with a win in the 100 back against competition from No. 13 LSU and Tulane. Her time of 52.33 was the fifth-fastest in the event in the country and the fastest in the Big 12 this week. She added podium finishes in the 200 medley relay (second place) and 200 back (third place) with times of 1:39.95 and 1:56.46, respectively. This is her second newcomer award this season and joins Chase Farris (2023-24) as the second Cougar to earn multiple awards in the same year.
