BYU & TCU Claim Season’s Final Weekly League Volleyball Awards

TCU’s Melanie Parra (offensive) and Sarah Sylvester (defensive) along with BYU’s Alex Bower (rookie) earned the season’s final weekly Big 12 volleyball accolades.

Parra led the Big 12 with 7.21 points per set during the week (No. 2 nationally) and 5.86 kills per set as the Horned Frogs picked up road victories over West Virginia and Cincinnati to mark the school’s first 20-win season since 2011. The senior set the TCU single-season program record for kills in the rally scoring era with 531 in 28 regular season matches. Parra also picked up her 1,000th career kill in a Horned Frog uniform, becoming the 14th player in school history to reach the milestone. This is her sixth Offensive Player of the Week honor this year, tied for the most by any player in a single season in league history.

Sylvester was atop the league leaderboards for the week with 2.00 blocks per set, including tallying a season-high 11 blocks against Cincinnati. The middle blocker from Livonia, Michigan was a key part of TCU holding its opponents to a combined .162 hitting percentage, the second lowest in the Conference during the two-match span. This is her third career weekly league honor and second of the season.

Bower had 56 assists in the Cougars’ road win over then-No. 11 Kansas, averaging 14.0 per set. The freshman from Nampa, Idaho paced the Cougars to a .252 team-hitting percentage during the week and notched her 10th double-double of the year in the regular season finale against K-State with 34 assists and 11 digs, setting BYU’s rally-scoring era freshman assist record during the match. This is her second Rookie of the Week title this season.
