Texas Sweeps 2024 Big 12 S&D Championship Titles

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Texas men and women swept the team titles for the 12th consecutive year at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park. The men’s team finished with a total of 1,979 points for their 28th consecutive title in Conference history while the women’s program tallied 2,092 points and their 22nd overall championship.

TCU ended the Championship in the runner-up slot with 1,430 points followed closely by BYU (1,402) in third for the men’s standings. Cincinnati (fourth) and West Virginia (fifth) rounded out the men’s programs with 1,285.50 and 1,138.50, respectively. On the women’s side, Houston (1,266.50) grabbed second place in its first year in the Conference, just ahead of the third-place Horned Frogs (1,215.50).

The Longhorns finished with three Big 12 Championship meet records including two individual event Championship records by Kelly Pash and Lydia Jacoby.

Texas earned seven of the eight “of the meet awards” including Pash, who took home her fourth consecutive Women’s Swimmer of the Meet with three individual wins (200 free, 200 fly, 200 IM). Will Modglin grabbed his first Men’s Swimmer of the Meet accolade after sweeping his three individual events (100 back, 200 IM, 200 back) and adding three gold relay medals.

Noah Duperre added his second consecutive Men’s Diver of the Meet after medaling in all four diving events (1-meter, 3-meter, platform, men’s team diving) and Hailey Hernandez made it three straight Women’s Diver of the Meet accolades as she grabbed golds in the 1-meter and women’s team diving.

Nate Germonprez collected the 26th straight Men’s Newcomer of the Meet for the Longhorns as he finished with a gold and two silver medals in his individual events with three more golds in relays. Erin Gemmell picked up the Women’s Newcomer of the Meet award with two individual gold medals in the 500 free and 100 free, one silver in the 200 free and one gold in the 800 free relay.

Tanner Braunton wound up the meet awards for UT as he medaled in three of the four diving events including golds in each of the platform and men’s team diving events.

Shiyun Lai grabbed the first “of the meet award” for Kansas since Jiayu Chen took the Women’s Diver of the Meet in 2020.

The top four individuals in each event were awarded All-Big 12 first team designation. The fifth-eighth place finishers are All-Big 12 second team.

The women’s 3-meter diving event kicked off the final session as Kansas’ Shiyun Lai grabbed the first Conference gold medal of her career with a score of 406.20. TCU’s Anna Kwong secured her highest placement of the week with a score of 369.75 to capture the silver medal. Texas’ Bridget O’Neil rounded out the podium with her second medal of the week and a score of 363.65.
 
Texas’ Olivia Bray was the next swimmer to stand atop an event as she won her third consecutive 200 back title (1:53.01). Fellow Longhorn Berit Berglund followed closely behind Bray to secure the 1-2 finish in a time of 1:55.43. TCU’s Tania Quaglieri came in third, just over 0.5 a second later.
Modglin won his first Big 12 title in the 200 back (1:39.73) while Hunter Gubeno took home the silver (1:39.95), his highest placement of the week. Texas’ Chris O’Connor rounded out the top three in the event with his second individual Big 12 medal in his career (1:43.12).

In the 100 free, Gemmell took the gold (48.08) followed by Cincinnati’s Jessica Davis (48.72) who earned the Bearcats their second individual silver medal of the night. On the men’s side, Germonprez garnered his first gold medal of the meet with a time of 42.24 as he led a trio of freshmen to the podium (BYU’s Jordan Tiffany and UT’s Camden Taylor).

Texas’ Erica Sullivan (women’s) and Alec Enyeart (Men’s) took the event titles in the longest event of the week as they recorded times of 15:52.90 and 14:58.71 in the women’s and men’s 1650 free events, respectively.

Jacoby defended her title in the 200 breast with an NCAA A-cut time of 2:05.58, with teammate Anna Elendt, the Big 12 record holder in the event, touching in 2:06.46 for the silver. Brayden Taivassalo ended his week with a winning time of 1:53.28 in the 200 breast, becoming the third Longhorn to win the event since 2019.

In the final diving event of the meet, the 2024 Big 12 Men’s Diving Newcomer of the Meet took the men’s platform event with a score of 452.20 as Braunton edged the 2023 champion Duperre (bronze). TCU’s Alec Hubbard grabbed runner-up with 409.25 points.

Texas ended the meet with back-to-back wins in the women’s and men’s 400 free relays. Both relays clocked NCAA A-cut times as the women’s group (Emma Davidson, Gemmell, Longi, Pash) clocked a time of 3:12.01 while Germonprez, Coby Carrozza, Cole Crane and Taylor finished in 2:48.89.
