The 2023-24 Big 12 Athlete of the Year nominees will be featured in alphabetical order by school starting Monday, June 17 through Tuesday, June 25 at 10 a.m. CT and 2 p.m. CT.
Each institution nominated one male and one female athlete of any classification that competed for their institution during the 2023-24 school year. Student-athletes were required to be in good academic standing and had to be from a league-sponsored sport.
The 14 schools that competed during the 2023-24 academic year are eligible.
The winners will be announced Wednesday, June 26. Stay tuned to Big12Sports.com and the league’s social media platforms to see the rest of the candidates.
This afternoon’s featured candidates are BYU’s Kenneth Rooks and Brecken Mozingo.
BYU Male Athlete of the Year Candidate
Kenneth Rooks, Cross Country and Track
Jr., Walla Walla, Washington
Accomplishments
- Honored as a 2023 NCAA Cross Country All-American.
- Was a four-time track All-American (three outdoor, one indoor), including three First Team honors.
- A 2023 NCAA DI steeplechase national champion (8:26.17).
- Selected as a Elite 90 Award recipient for having the highest GPA of any athlete at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country National Championship.
BYU Female Athlete of the Year Candidate
Brecken Mozingo, Soccer
Sr., Sandy, Utah
Accomplishments
- Led the Cougars in goals (14), assists (15), points (43) and shots (89) during the 2023 season.
- Earned All-Big 12 First Team and Big 12 All-Tournament Team honors. With her five goals and five assists during the NCAA Tournament, Mozingo was also selected for the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team.
- With her MAC Hermann Trophy Finalist selection, she became only the third BYU player in program history to earn the honor.
- One of four finalists for the 2024 Honda Sports Award for Women’s Soccer, which has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 48 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”.
