ARIZ, ASU, UH and TCU Garner Big 12 Swimming & Diving Weekly Awards

Arizona State’s Adam Chaney (men’s swimmer) and Remi Fabiani (men’s newcomer) were joined by Arizona’s Luke Hernandez (men’s diver) as the recipients of the Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Awards. On the women’s side TCU’s duo of Nina Vadovicova (women’s co-swimmer) and Taylor Steelman (women’s newcomer), Arizona’s Riley Botton (women’s co-swimmer) and Houston’s Michelle McLeod (women’s diver) rounded out the Conference’s weekly awards for competition ending October 13.

Chaney captured three gold medals at the All-Arizona Invite against Arizona, Grand Canyon, and Northern Arizona. He won the 50 freestyle with a time of 18.95, the only sub-19 second time of the day. The graduate student anchored the 100 free relay with a 7.98 split, and led off the 200 medley relay with a 20.43 backstroke leg. Chaney’s performances helped the Sun Devils sweep all relay events. It is the first Big 12 recognition for the graduate transfer.

Hernandez swept both diving events for the Wildcats at the All-Arizona Invite, taking first in the 1-meter (342.85) and 3-meter (335.75) competitions. The freshman from Holly Springs, N.C. is the second Wildcat to be named Big 12 Men’s Diver of the Week since Arizona joined the Conference in the 2024-25 season.

Fabiani won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:32.66, the ninth-fastest in ASU history and the only sub-1:33 mark in the meet. The graduate transfer also finished second in the 100 backstroke (45.96) and contributed an 8.69 split in the winning 100 free relay. He is the first Sun Devil to be named Big 12 Men’s Newcomer of the Week this season.

Botton claimed one individual gold medal with a victory in the 50 freestyle (22.29) as the Wildcats took the top two finishes in the event. The senior then contributed to two gold medal relays in the 200 medley relay (21.66 split) and 100 free relay (10.38 split). She also added a fourth-place result in the 100 free. It is the first Big 12 weekly award of her career.

Vadovicova swept the breaststroke events against Houston and Rice, winning the 50 breast (28.77), 100 breast (1:00.69), and 200 breast (2:12.07) with season-best times in the former two. The junior from Selpice, Slovakia also contributed to TCU’s relays, posting a 28.80 split in the 200 medley relay and a 1:01.11 split in the 400 medley relay. This marks the second time this season Vadovicova has garnered Conference recognition.

McLeod earned first place in all three women’s diving events against TCU and Rice. The junior posted a score of 289.80 in the 1-meter dive, 301.20 in the 3-meter event and a score of 238.65 in the platform dive. All three scores achieved zone-qualifying scores. It is her second Big 12 weekly award after being named Big 12 Women’s Diver of the Week on November 27, 2024.

Steelman recorded wins in the 200 backstroke (1:59.81) and 400 IM (4:22.79) in the Horned Frogs’ second meet of the season. Both times were personal bests for the freshman. She also added a second-place finish in the 200 IM (2:04.89), fifth-place finish in the 200 free (1:52.50) and a 26.09 backstroke split in the 200 medley relay.
