TCU’s Filip Suchanski (men’s swimmer), Cincinnati’s Ramez Diaa (men’s diver) and Conner Hogan (men’s newcomer) were named the recipients of the Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving weekly awards. On the women’s side, West Virginia’s Gabriela Martin (women’s swimmer) and Kansas’ pair of Shiyun Lai (women’s diver) and Sammy Cummins (women’s newcomer) rounded out the weekly honors for competition ending October 19.
Suchanski was the top point scorer for TCU in the dual against Texas A&M, winning the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:43.52. He also placed third in the 100 back (48.50), contributed a 23.22 split on the fourth-place 200 medley relay (1:30.27), and set a new personal best in the 200 freestyle (1:37.99). It is the second Conference honor this season and the third of the sophomore’s career.
Diaa posted the highest score in the Bearcats’ meet against Miami (Ohio) to take home the 3-meter dive title with a score of 383.25. The sophomore’s individual win contributed to the 175-125 team victory in Cincinnati’s second meet of the year. It is the sophomore’s first Conference accolade this season and third of his career.
Hogan swept all four of his events against Miami (OH). He won the 50-yard freestyle (20.37), 100-yard freestyle (45.65), and contributed to first-place finishes in both the 400-yard medley relay (3:17.36) and 200-yard medley relay (1:22.00). The sophomore is the first
Bearcat to be named Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Newcomer of the Week this season.
Martin led the Mountaineers with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (50.66), second in the 200 freestyle (1:48.84), fourth in the 200 IM (2:06.45), and anchored the 400 freestyle relay to a second-place finish (3:26.65) against Delaware. The senior was one of two Mountaineers on the women’s team to win an individual event. It was her second event win of the season. It is the first Conference weekly award of her career.
Lai opened the season with back-to-back wins in both diving events against South Dakota, taking first in the 3-meter (382.95) and 1-meter (332.85) dives. The junior from Guangdong Province, China, was one of four Jayhawks to win two individual events against South Dakota. It is her first weekly Conference recognition this season and eighth of her career.
Cummins highlighted her meet against South Dakota with a personal-best time of 2:00.51 in the 200 butterfly. She also helped the Jayhawks to victory in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:24.26) to finish with two golds in two events. The freshman from Orange County, California, is the first Jayhawk to be named Big 12 Women’s Newcomer of the Week since Anna Gearhart on Dec. 11, 2024.
