Arizona State’s Ilya Kharun (men’s swimmer), Miriam Sheehan (women’s swimmer), Kayden Hayes (women’s diver) and Alexia Sotomayor (women’s newcomer) were joined by BYU’s Marti Llop (men’s diver) and Mattia Reina (men’s newcomer) as the Big 12 Swimming and Diving weekly award winners for competition ending October 9.
Kharun opened his junior season with four gold medals against UNLV. The Las Vegas native set an ASU pool record in the 100 butterfly (43.91), won the 200 butterfly (1:37.94), and contributed to first-place finishes in both the 200 medley relay (18.91 split on the fly leg) and 400 free relay (41.17 anchor split). His 200 butterfly time was just one-hundredth of a second off his personal best and a school record. This marks Kharun’s seventh Big 12 weekly honor and first of the 2025 season.
Llop led BYU’s diving squad with a first-place finish in the 3-meter event (467.40) and a third-place result in the 1-meter (306.90) against CMU and Adams State. The sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, contributed to the Cougars’ meet-winning score of 266 points. It is his first Big 12 weekly award of his career.
Reina made his collegiate debut for BYU with a second-place finish in the 100 fly (47.58) and a victory in the 200 fly (1:47.12), which ranks as the ninth-fastest time in program history. The freshman from Milan, Italy, also competed in the 200 and 500 freestyle events, with a fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:37.75).
Sheehan claimed four victories for Arizona State against UNLV, winning the 100 backstroke (52.24), 100 butterfly (52.76), and contributing to first-place finishes in the 200 medley relay (24.25 backstroke leg) and 400 free relay (49.31 split). The junior from Dubuque, Iowa, helped the Sun Devils sweep all relay events. It is her first career Big 12 weekly award.
Hayes swept both diving events for Arizona State, winning the 1-meter (264.08) and 3-meter (274.58) dive competitions against UNLV. The junior from Victoria, British Columbia, scored 18 points for the Sun Devils and helped the women’s team to a 242-57 season-opening win. It is the first Conference of her career.
Sotomayor placed in the top two in all four of her events in her first collegiate meet for Arizona State. The freshman won the 200 backstroke (1:55.44) and placed second in the 100 back (53.24) with personal best times in both of her individual events. She then contributed a 24.57 split in the 200 medley relay and a 50.88 split in the 400 free relay.
