OSU Capitalizes on Defensive Miscues in Win Over Baylor at Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship

ARLINGTON, Texas - No. 7 seed Oklahoma State (28-22) topped No. 10 Baylor (33-22) in game three of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Globe Life Park. Both sides took advantage of costly errors that resulted in Oklahoma State pulling away for a 4-3 victory. 
 
The Cowboy pitching trio of Sean Youngerman, Mario Pesca and Gabe Davis combined to allow just one earned run on seven hits. Pesca earned the victory, throwing 3.2 innings of scoreless action in relief of Youngerman while surrendering just two hits.  
Oklahoma State struck first in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to right field by sophomore centerfielder Kollin Ritchie.  
 
After Baylor took advantage of defensive miscues by the Cowboys, two unearned runs were plated due to a throwing error in the top of the third. 
 
OSU’s Nolan Schubart missed a homer by inches that hit high off the left field wall and coasted into second base with a one-out double. Two Cowboys were stranded in the home half of the fourth with effective work from Baylor’s starting pitcher Ethan Calder. 
 
The Bears used that momentum with two consecutive hits to start the fifth, scoring redshirt senior Enzo Apodaca after his lead-off double resulted in a run from Tyriq Kemp's sacrifice fly. The offense from Baylor pushed the lead to two, making it a 3-1 ballgame in favor of the Bears. 
 
OSU responded with a couple hits of their own and a Baylor error tied the game at three through six innings. 
 
The OSU offense took advantage of yet another Baylor error and scored a run to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh, following a hit and a walk surrendered by the Bears bullpen. 
 
Davis, a right hander out of the bullpen, took the hill in the top of the ninth to close out the ballgame for the Cowboys. The OSU pitching staff put up four consecutive zeros to silence the Baylor bats in the back half of the contest which led to the victory. 
 
Redshirt sophomore Lucas Davenport (L, 4-2) took the loss in today's matchup in 1.1 innings pitched giving up one earned run, a walk, and two strikeouts. Two unearned runs were plated in his outing.
