ARIZ, ASU, UH and Utah Earn Big 12 Swimming and Diving Weekly Awards

Arizona State’s trio of Ilya Kharun (men’s swimmer), Remi Fabiani (men’s newcomer) and Albane Cachot (women’s newcomer) were joined by Arizona’s Eleni Gewalt (women’s swimmer), Houston’s Michelle McLeod (women’s diver) and Utah’s Elias Petersen (men’s diver) as the recipients of this week’s Big 12 swimming and diving awards.

Kharun swept both butterfly events for Arizona State in its dual meet against No. 17 Arizona. The junior picked up wins in the 100 butterfly (44.24) and 200 butterfly (1:38.58). The Las Vegas native also contributed on two relays, swimming the leadoff leg on the Sun Devils’ winning 200 medley relay (1:20.81) and posting an 18.31 split on the 200 free relay (1:15.36). It marks his fourth Big 12 weekly honor this season and the 10th of his career.

Petersen swept the springboard events in Utah’s rivalry meet against BYU, earning first-place finishes on both the 1-meter (370.30) and 3-meter (398.55) boards. The senior’s performances marked his fifth win of the season on 1-meter and fourth on 3-meter as he helped power the Utes to a dual-meet win over the Cougars. It is his third Conference recognition this season and sixth of his career.

Fabiani medaled in three events for Arizona State in its meet against No. 17 Arizona, winning both individual freestyle events he competed in. The graduate transfer touched first in the 200 freestyle (1:32.27) and 100 freestyle (41.57), while also contributing an 18.31 split on the 200 free relay (1:15.36). It is the fourth Men’s Newcomer of the Week he’s collected this season.

Gewalt led Arizona in its dual against No. 17 Arizona State, sweeping the breaststroke events with victories in the 100 breaststroke (59.13) and 200 breaststroke (2:11.39). The senior posted season-best times in both races and added a key contribution on the Wildcats’ winning 200 medley relay with a 26.58 breaststroke split, helping Arizona earn the in-state win and her second Big 12 accolade this season.

McLeod delivered three top-two finishes for Houston at Rice, capturing first place on both the platform (318.38) and 3-meter (339.90) boards while finishing second on the 1-meter (295.20). The junior’s score on the platform marked a personal best score, earning her fifth weekly award this season.

Cachot broke the Arizona State program record with a winning 100 freestyle time of 47.82, becoming the second Sun Devil to break the 48-second barrier in the event. She added another event win in the 200 free (1:44.34) and also contributed to both the 200 freestyle (1:28.13) and 200 medley (1:36.15) relays for Arizona State.
