Baylor’s Amber Toven (player), UCF’s Isabella Vega (pitcher) and Utah’s Mia Gomez (freshman) captured Big 12 softball weekly honors for their performances in games played through Feb. 15.
Toven was in BU’s lineup in all six games last week, hitting .435 in 23 at-bats. The Los Angeles native tallied 10 hits, 11 RBI and nine runs scored with a .739 slugging average. She hit two home runs, one of which was a grand slam, last week to bring her season total to four, leaving her two long balls shy of tying her career total. On the defensive end, she was credited with 19 assists and 10 putouts. This is the senior’s first Conference honor.
Vega earned three wins during her four appearances in the circle for the Knights last week. She closed out the final inning of the midweek matchup against Missouri, served as a relief pitcher against Northwestern and then-No. 12/10 LSU, before pitching a complete game against NC State at the Clearwater Invitational. In 15.1 innings, she struck out 15 batters, only gave up nine hits and tallied a 0.00 ERA. This is her first league award this season and the third accolade picked up by the redshirt-sophomore.
Gomez recorded a batting average of .563 in 16 at-bats, helping the Utes finish the week 4-1. The freshman from Moorpark, California, hit her first collegiate home run against Santa Clara as she went 2-for-4 at the plate. She wrapped up her week by recording two consecutive three-hit games against San Jose State and UC Santa Barbara to end her week with nine hits, three runs and adding four RBI to bring her season total to 14. Gomez also recorded 17 putouts.
