Arizona’s Sydney Stewart (player) and Texas Tech’s NiJaree Canady (pitcher) captured Big 12 softball’s positional weekly awards, with Kansas’ Ella Boyer (freshman) earning the weekly accolade for first-year players.
Stewart led Arizona batters with a .700 on-base percentage during the Big 12 opening series against BYU. The catcher went 4-for-6, scoring four runs and led the league with eight RBIs last week. Her five RBI in the series opener matched a career-high for the senior. The senior tallied 11 total bases. This is Stewart’s first Big 12 weekly honor.
Canady claims her second straight Pitcher of the Week award after helping Texas Tech claim the series against Houston. She posted her second consecutive no-hitter in the series opener, shutting out the Cougars and throwing six strikeouts in the 10-0 five-inning victory. She then threw 2.1 innings in the series closer, only allowing one hit and an unearned run. Canady, who has thrown two no-hitters this season, is the first Red Raider pitcher to record three no-hitters during her time with the program.
Boyer’s .500 batting average helped the Jayhawks post a 4-0 record last week, facing Wichita State and Utah State. In the midweek matchup against the Shockers, the freshman hit two home runs and had four RBI. During the series against the Aggies, the Spring, Texas native scored four runs in four hits and added five more RBI to bring her season total to 32. Boyer leads KU with eight home runs as she picks up the program’s first weekly award this season.
