Texas Tech’s Kaitlyn Terry (player) and Kansas’ Ella Boyer (freshman) pick up their second Big 12 softball weekly awards this season, while Arizona State’s Meika Lauppe and Utah’s Shelbee Jones shared the league’s weekly accolade for pitchers.
Terry posted a .571 batting average in the top-25 matchup between the then-No. 2 Red Raiders and the No. 13 Arizona Wildcats. After being run-ruled in the opening game, the junior recorded three hits in five at-bats, scoring five runs in the doubleheader on Saturday to conclude the series. Terry hit three home runs and drove in six runs as Tech outscored Arizona 24-6 in the final two games. This is her second weekly honor in three weeks.
Boyer earned her second consecutive league honor for first-year players for her performance in the Conference series against Houston. She hit .500, had a .692 on-base percentage and 1.750 slugging percentage in eight at-bats. The freshman recorded six runs and tallied seven RBIs as the Jayhawks claimed the series 2-1. Boyer’s home runs in the second game of the series accounted for two of KU’s four in the fourth inning, helping the program record its most homers in a single game and a single inning.
Lauppe had a 1.50 ERA after throwing 14.0 innings during the midweek matchup against UTEP and a home series against then-No. 21 Oklahoma State, collecting a 3-0 record last week. She held UTEP scoreless in four innings before relief pitching in the eighth inning in the Sun Devils’ 3-2 win. Lauppe appeared in each game of the series against the Cowgirls and finished her week only giving up four runs (three earned) and throwing eight strikeouts.
Jones threw the 32nd no-hitter in Utah history against Abilene Christian, which was also the eighth no-hitter thrown by Big 12 pitchers this season. She then threw another five innings against ACU, only giving up one earned run and three hits. Jones ended the week with 16 strikeouts in 10.0 innings. She picks up Utah’s first weekly accolade for pitchers since joining the league a season ago, while being the third Ute to earn a Big 12 honor this week.
