Big 12 Ties Its All-Time High With 7 NCAA Tournament Teams
The Big 12 tied its all-time conference high with seven teams invited to the 2004 NCAA Championship. The Big 12 also had seven bids in 2001 and 2002. Oklahoma earned the league's automatic berth after winning the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament. Texas, the Big 12 regular season champion, received the No. 1 seed in the West Region as an at-large team. Baylor, Colorado, Kansas State, Missouri and Texas Tech also earned at-large berths.

The Big 12 has nine postseason teams overall with Iowa State and Nebraska playing in the WNIT. The conference last had nine postseason teams in 1999 with five NCAA Tournament teams and 4 in the WNIT.

Big 12 Has 5 Top 4 Seeds
Five of the Big 12's seven NCAA Tournament teams earned a top four seed. Texas became the third Big 12 team to earn a No. 1 seed. Oklahoma got the top seed in the West Region in 2002 and Texas Tech was the No. 1 seed in the Midwest in 1998.

Kansas State got a No. 2 seed, Oklahoma a No. 3, and Baylor and Texas Tech were four seeds. This year marks the fourth consecutive that the Big 12 has had at least two top two seeds.

Texas and Texas Tech received No. 2 seeds in the 2003 NCAA Tournament. Kansas State was a three seed, Colorado a six and Oklahoma a 10.

In 2002, the Big 12 had a number one seed (Oklahoma) and a number two (Baylor) as all seven Big 12 teams received a top four seed. Colorado, Iowa State and Kansas State were three seeds while Texas and Texas Tech were four seeds.

In 2001, the Big 12 had three number two seeds (Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech). Prior to 2001, the Big 12 had never had more than one team seeded in the top two in the same year. Texas Tech was a top seed in the 1998 championship, but no other conference team was seeded higher than fourth. Colorado earned a two seed in the 1997 championship with Texas and Kansas getting three seeds. Texas Tech got a two seed in the 1999 tournament with Iowa State getting a four seed. Iowa State and Texas Tech were the league's top two seeded teams in 2000 with both getting three seeds.

All 12 Teams Have Been to the Big Dance
Every Big 12 Conference team has made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Texas leads the pack as the Longhorns are making their 20th appearance in 2004 out of the 23 NCAA Tournaments. Only four schools (Louisiana Tech, Tennessee, Georgia, Old Dominion) have made more NCAA Tournament appearances than Texas. Texas Tech is making its 17th appearance and 15th straight in 2004. Colorado is in the NCAA Championship for the 12th time while Kansas State and Missouri make their eighth appearances, Oklahoma its seventh, and Baylor is third.

Big 12 Teams' 107 NCAA Tournament Appearances Rank Second to the SEC
Including 2004, teams from the Big 12 Conference have made 107 NCAA Tournament appearances, second only to the SEC with 152. The Big Ten is third with 100.

Big 12 Teams Have 120 NCAA Tournament Wins
Big 12 Conference teams have compiled 120 NCAA Tournament wins in the 23 years of the event to place fourth among all Division I leagues. The SEC leads the nation with 252 wins followed by the Big East with 135 and the ACC with 124. Texas leads the Big 12 with 28 NCAA Tournament wins, followed by Texas Tech with 27.

Two Big 12 Teams Hosting Subregionals
In addition to Texas, Iowa State is also hosting an NCAA Championship subregional in 2004. The Big 12 has had six host sites in the first two years of the NCAA's predetermined sites format. Last year, Colorado, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech hosted subregionals.

Two Big 12 Teams Have Won National Titles
Texas and Texas Tech have both won national championships while members of the now-defunct Southwest Conference. Texas won the 1986 title with a perfect 34-0 record and is one of only four teams to record a perfect season in NCAA history (Connecticut in 2002 and 1995; Tennessee in 1998). Texas Tech captured the 1993 championship with a 31-3 record. Texas also competed in the 2003 and 1987 Final Fours while Oklahoma advanced to the championship game of the 2002 event.

Eleven Big 12 Teams Have Played in NCAA Regional Competition
Eleven Big 12 Conference teams have advanced to an NCAA regional semifinal, and five have played in a regional final. Texas Tech made its 11th regional semifinal appearance in 2003 and advanced to its fourth regional final. Texas made its 11th Sweet 16 and eighth trip to the regional final. Colorado played in its sixth regional semifinal in 2003 and has made three trips to the regional final. Oklahoma played in its fourth regional semifinal and first regional final in 2002. Kansas State made its third Sweet 16 appearance in 2002 and has played in one Elite Eight. Iowa State (one regional final) made its third regional semifinal appearance in 2001. Missouri has played in the Sweet 16 twice. Kansas, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M have played in one each.

Iowa State and Nebraska Make First Appearances in WNIT
Iowa State and Nebraska are making their first appearances in the Women's National Invitation Tournament in 2004. The WNIT involves 32 teams in a single-elimination format. All games, including the semifinals and championship, are hosted by participating schools at their home facility. Baylor advanced to the championship game and Missouri to the third round in 2003.

Eight Big 12 Teams Have Made WNIT Appearances
Eight Big 12 teams have been invited to the WNIT in its seven years of existence for 13 total appearances. Baylor and Oklahoma State played in the inaugural event with Baylor advancing to the championship game against Penn State. Baylor made repeat appearances in 1999 and 2003, also advancing to the finals in 2003. Colorado, Kansas State and Oklahoma made their WNIT debuts in 1999. Missouri represented the Big 12 in 2000, 2002 and 2003. Oklahoma State made a return appearance in the WNIT in 2001. Iowa State and Nebraska are making their first WNIT appearances in 2004.

Oklahoma won the 2004 Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament title, its second in three years, with a 66-47 win over No. 1 seed Texas. The sixth-seed Sooners are the lowest seed to ever win the championship and the first team (men or women) to win four games to claim the title.

Oklahoma joins Iowa State and Texas Tech as the three teams to win two Big 12 Tournament titles. Colorado and Texas have one championship each.

The 2004 event marked the second time the No. 1 seed has faced the No. 6 seed in the championship game. No. 1 Iowa State beat No. 6 Texas in the 2000 Big 12 Tournament. The 2004 and 2000 tournaments are also the only ones in which two of the top four seeds didn't advance past the second round. In 2004, No. 5 Baylor beat No. 4 Texas Tech and No. 6 Oklahoma upended No. 3 Colorado in the quarterfinals. The No. 5 and 6 seeds also advanced to the semis in 2000.

The Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament was held in Dallas' Reunion Arena for the second consecutive year in 2004. The first six postseason events were played in Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium. The 2005 tournament will return to Kansas City.

The 8,226 attendance at the 2004 championship game is the third-largest for the title contest. The total attendance for the tournament was 34,851, second only to the 35,619 in 2003.

Texas and Kansas State are 2004 Co-Big 12 Champions. The title is the second consecutive for Texas and the first for K-State since the inception of the Big 12. Kansas State is the sixth different Big 12 team to win at least a share of the Big 12 championship, joining Texas, Kansas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Iowa State.

Texas won the head-to-head tiebreaker over Kansas State and received the top seed in the 2004 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament.

Texas in 2003 and 2004 is the fifth different team to garner the top seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament. Kansas was the top seed in the first event in 1997, followed by Texas Tech in 1998 and 1999. Iowa State won the tiebreaker over Texas Tech and Oklahoma to get the No. 1 seed in 2000. Oklahoma was the top seed in 2001 and 2002.

The number one seed has won five of eight Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Tournament titles.

The No. 1 seed has the best winning percentage in Big 12 tournament games at 87 percent with 20 wins and 3 losses. Other seeds listed by highest winning percentage are: No. 3 seed: 64.7 percent (11-6), No. 5 seed: 63.6 percent (14-8), No. 6 seed: 61.1 percent (11-7), No. 2 seed: 55.5 percent (10-8), No. 7 and 9 seeds: 38.5 percent (5-8), No. 4, 8, 10 and 11 seeds: 27.3 percent (3-8), and No. 12 seed: 0.0 percent (0-8).

Of the 88 Big 12 tournament games, 67 (76.1 percent) have been won by the higher-seeded team.

The No. 5 seed has never lost a first round tournament game while the No. 1 and 2 seeds have never lost a second round game.

In 2003, Texas became the fifth team to win both the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles in the same year. Iowa State accomplished it in 2000, Texas Tech in 1998 and 1999, and Oklahoma in 2002.

Oklahoma was the second school to win both the men's and women's Big 12 tournament titles in the same year after taking both 2002 tournaments. Iowa State won both tournaments in 2000.

The top two seeds have advanced to the championship game in only two of the eight tournaments. In 2002, No. 1 seed Oklahoma beat No. 2 seed Baylor 84-69. The top two seeds also played in 1999 with No. 1 seed Texas Tech defeating No. 2 seed Iowa State 73-59.

Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech have all appeared in three Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament championship games. Iowa State's appearances were all consecutive, 1999-2001, Oklahoma was in the 2001, 2002 and 2004 title games, while Tech was in the 1998, 1999 and 2003 championship games.

Iowa State's three-point 68-65 win over Oklahoma in 2001 was the closest margin of victory in a Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament championship game. OU's 19-point win over Texas in 2004 is the largest in a championship game.

Oklahoma (2004), Texas (2000) and Kansas State (1997) are the only teams in the eight-year history of the tournament to play on the first day and advance to the championship. OU is the only of the three to win the championship.

Iowa State's Stacy Frese (1998-2000) and Angie Welle (2000-02) are the only players to be named to three All-Big 12 Tournament teams. Texas Tech's Angie Braziel (1998-99), ISU's Megan Taylor (1999, 2001) and Oklahoma's Stacey Dales (2001-02) and Dionnah Jackson (2002, 2004) are the only two-time honorees.

A Big 12 team has claimed the top spot in one of the two national polls for four weeks in 2004. Texas was ranked No. 1 the weeks of Feb. 9 and 16 in the Associated Press Poll. Texas Tech was ranked No. 1 in the Jan. 6 and 13 USA Today/ESPN coaches polls. The Big 12 had not had a team ranked No. 1 prior to this season.

The Big 12 had a nation-high seven teams ranked in the Jan. 26 Associated Press Poll with Nebraska climbing into the Top 25 at 25th. The Big 12 had not had seven ranked teams since the final 10 AP and final 11 USA Today/ESPN Polls of the 2001-02 season. At least six teams have been ranked eight weeks this season in the AP Poll and nine in the coaches poll. The Big 12 had five teams ranked in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN polls for the first time since Nov. 25, 2002, when preseason rankings were released. The Big 12 had at least five rated teams in 30 straight AP polls from Jan. 8, 2001-Nov. 25, 2002.

Texas Tech and Texas' top three rankings in both polls from Dec. 29-Jan. 13 polls also marked the first time the Big 12 has had two of the nation's top three rated teams.

The Big 12 closed out a spectacular regular season non-conference schedule with a 113-27 (80.7 percent) record. The Big 12 continues to lead the nation in winning percentage with an 80.7 mark entering postseason games. This record includes 22 games against Top 25 teams in which Big 12 schools are 12-10. Fifteen of the matchups have been between ranked teams. Big 12 ranked teams are 10-5 vs. ranked opposition. Big 12 teams have played nine teams ranked in the Top 10 and are 4-5 in those contests. Eleven Big 12 squads faced at least one Top 25 non-conference opponent.
