MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- After leading the Longhorns to the 2005 National Championship with a 56-16 overall record, University of Texas head baseball coach Augie Garrido was recognized as both the 2005 Division I Midwest Region Coach of the Year and the Division I National Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
These distinctions are added to a long list of accolades for the all-time winningest coach in Division I baseball who has amassed 1,542 wins over his 37-year career at five universities (San Francisco State, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, Cal State Fullerton, Illinois and Texas). The Midwest Region Coach of the Year honor marks Garrido's seventh such regional award (1975, 1979, 1984, 1995, 2002, 2004 and 2005), while the National Coach of the Year decoration is the sixth of his career (1975, 1979, 1984, 1995, 2002 and 2005). Notably, the Longhorns' most recent national title is the fifth of Garrido's overall career and his second at Texas (three at Cal State Fullerton -- 1979, 1984, 1995; two at Texas -- 2002, 2005).
