May 24, 2006

OKLAHOMA CITY - Nebraska defeated Baylor, 3-2, in the first game of the 2006 Big 12 Championships at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

In a rematch of last year's Big 12 Championship, Baylor (34-23) out hit Nebraska (40-14), 8-5, but the Bears left 11 runners on base. Charlie Shirek started the game for the Huskers and pitched 6.1 innings but Tony Watson (9-1) picked up the win for NU.

The Huskers got on the board first with a Ryan Wehrle home run in the bottom of the third off of Randall Lindebaugh. It was Wherle's seventh home run of the season. Lindebaugh scattered 3 hits and two runs in a career high 6.2 innings of work.

The Bears evened the score in the sixth inning when a Ben Booker sac fly scored Chase Gerdes. Baylor extended the lead in the seventh when Seth Fortenberry hit a solo blast. It was his eighth long ball of the year.

Nebraska struck back quickly with a Jeff Christy's seventh home run of the year in the bottom of the seventh. The Huskers took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth when an Andrew Brown single drove in Bryce Nimmo for the game winning run.

In the top of the ninth, Beamer Weems hit a blast that fell just short of tying the game and dropped for a double. Nick Cassavechia (3-4) picked up the loss for the Bears while Brett Jensen picked up his 11th save of the year for the Huskers.

Nebraska will play Texas Tech on Thursday at 8 p.m., while Baylor will go against Texas at 5 p.m., also on Thursday.
