Kansas Downs Oklahoma at Big 12 Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY- The Kansas Jayhawks downed the Oklahoma Sooners, 7-2, on the first day of the 2006 Big 12 Championships at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Kodiak Quick (11-4) got the start for the Jayhawks and picked up the win in seven innings of work. Quick allowed one earned run and struck out four on Wednesday.

The Jayhawks got off to a quick start when Matt Baty doubled in the first at bat of the game. He later scored on a Jared Schweitzer double.

Kansas kept it going in the next inning with a Brock Simpson double. Simpson scored at the next at bat when Ryne Price singled. Price would later score on a Matt Baty double. Baty went 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs and two doubles in the game.

KU added three runs in the fourth to extend the Jayhawk lead to 6-0. Buck Afenir hit a two run long ball in the inning. Baty was up to bat next and continued his great game with another home run for the Jayhawks.

Afenir drove in his third RBI when he singled and drove in Erik Morrison in the fifth.

The Sooners stopped the Jayhawks shut out bid when Ryan Rohlinger scored on a Chuckie Caufield sac fly in the bottom of the fifth. Oklahoma picked up their second run when Kody Kaiser doubled in the eighth scoring Aaron Reza.
