Missouri Upsets Oklahoma State at Big 12 Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY-- The seventh-seeded Missouri Tigers upset second-seeded Oklahoma State, 9-5, on the first day of the 2006 Big 12 Championships at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

The Cowboys (39-16) and Tigers (30-24) were evenly matched until Missouri exploded for five runs in the top of the ninth inning. Oklahoma State committed three errors and left nine runners on base on Wednesday.

Nathan Culp (11-5) started the game for Missouri and picked up the win while striking out six batters in 8.1 innings.

Oklahoma State started off strong with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Corey Brown singled in the games first at bat and would eventually score on an error by the catcher. Shelby Ford singled and would later score on a Rebel Ridling sacrifice fly.

The Tigers momentarily took the lead with a three-run third inning. J.C. Field doubled in the first at bat of the inning. A batter later, Derek Chambers would reach base on an error by Jordy Mercer which allowed Field to score. Chambers and Jacob Friday were driven in by Tiger singles.

The Cowboys answered in the bottom of the third with a solo shot by Brown. It was the sophomore's 11th home run this season.

Missouri reclaimed the lead once again when Field scored once more after a Mercer error.

The Cowboys tied up the score quickly when Ty Wright scored on a John Schindler sac fly in the bottom of the seventh.

The Tigers took the lead for good with a five runs in the top of the ninth. Missouri hit five singles in the inning to score all five runs.

Jordy Mercer hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth but O-State could not manage any more runs and snapped a three-game winning streak.

Oliver Odle (4-4) got the loss for Oklahoma State after 8.1 innings of work.

Missouri will play Oklahoma at 5 p.m., on Friday and Oklahoma State will face Kansas at 8 p.m.
