OKLAHOMA CITY - The Baylor Bears finished their 2006 Big 12 Baseball Championship by defeating the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 5-3, on Saturday at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
Baylor (35-24) finishes the 2006 Big 12 Championships with a 1-2 record while the Red Raiders (31-26-1) finish pool play 0-3.
Baylor struck first with a run in the top of the third when Beamer Weems scored on a Kevin Russo single.
Kyle Martin tied the score for Texas Tech by hitting his eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the third.
Baylor retook the lead in the sixth when Chase Gerdes singled to right field to score Kevin Sevigny. The Bears then extended their lead to 5-1 after a Weems home run that scored Tim Jackson and Gerdes.
After the Red Raiders added a run in the bottom of the sixth, Texas Tech then used a Patrick Smart pinch hit to score Roger Kieschnick in the seventh to pull within two of Baylor.
VanAllen (7-5) started the game for the Bears and picked up the win in six innings of work. Colt Hynes (5-3) picked up the loss for Texas Tech after giving up five runs in 5.2 innings of work.
