Finals Set For Big 12 Tennis Championships

April 28, 2007

The finals are set for the 2007 Big 12 Tennis Championships at the Plaza Tennis Center - and the same two schools will be competing for the crown as last season. No. 1 seed Baylor and No. 3 Texas are matched up in the men's bracket, while the No. 1 Bears and No. 2 Longhorns will play on the women's side. The finals will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Baylor had its second straight shutout on the women's side, defeating OSU by a 4-0 score. The Bears will make their third consecutive appearance in the Big 12 finals. Over the past two seasons, BU has captured 20 of its last 21 points in Big 12 Championship action and has won five matches in a row. Texas earned a hard-fought 4-3 tally over Texas A&M. Freshman Vanja Corovic clinched the match at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 7-5 victory. Baylor and Texas have met three times in the Big 12 finals, with the Longhorns holding a 2-1 advantage.

Texas' men advanced to the finals for the second straight year and sixth time overall with a 4-1 win over the Cowboys. The match was clinched at No. 3 singles by junior Luis Diaz Barriga, who won his 19th consecutive outing with a 0-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 victory. The Longhorns are looking to win back-to-back men's tennis titles for the first time. Baylor will be playing in its sixth straight championship match and eighth overall. The Bears have won four of the last five postseason crowns. The Longhorns are 2-0 all-time against BU in the men's finals.
