Baylor Wins Big 12 Men's & Women's Tennis Championships

    Kansas City, Mo. - Baylor earned two crowns at the Plaza Tennis Center, capturing the men's and women's title at the 2007 Big 12 Tennis Championships. The Bears are the second team (Texas) in league history to win both tennis championships in the same year.

    In the men's championship, Baylor opened play by winning two of three matches to earn the doubles point. The Bears moved on to clinched the match by winning at No. 2, 5 and 6 singles. The clincher came at No. 2, with Michal Kokta posting a 6-2, 7-5 tally. The senior was named the Men's Championship Most Outstanding Player after recording two singles and one doubles victory. He the second BU player in the last three years to garner the honor. The team title for Baylor was its fifth postseason crown since the Big 12 began play in 1997.

    Texas started the women's championship with victories in two of three matches for the doubles point. Baylor then came back in hard-fought singles play to win four of the six matches. The clinching match came in the last one contested, as BU's Iva Mihaylova won at No. 6 by a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-0 score. The senior was named the Women's Championship Most Outstanding Player. She had three wins at singles and three at doubles in the event. The Baylor women's squad captured its second consecutive crown and second overall.

    All four teams await selection to the NCAA Championships, which begin May 11-12 at campus sites to be determined. BU earns the leagues automatic bids, with the full announcement of the bracket to come on Tuesday, May 1 on ESPNews between 1:30 - 2:00 p.m. Central Time.
