Oklahoma is heading to the second round of the women's NCAA Tournament because the Sooners went to Vegas in their first round victory.

Sophomore Aaryn Ellenberg - who is nicknamed "Vegas" because she's from Las Vegas - scored 21 of her game-high 28 points in the second half as No. 6 seed Oklahoma rolled to an 88-67 victory over No. 11 Michigan Sunday in Norman, Okla.

Oklahoma advances to the second round and will face No. 3 St. John's at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday in the Fresno Regional. The Red Storm needed a coast-to-coast, buzzer-beating drive and layup by Nadirah McKenith to defeat No. 14 Creighton, 69-67, before the Sooners rolled past the Wolverines.

The Sooners (21-12), playing on their home court, jumped to a quick 14-4 lead and led by a dozen points at halftime. But Ellenberg played just seven minutes in the first half because of foul trouble.

"I sat a lot of the first half, so I saw how much fun they were having. I really wanted to be part of the action. That was pretty much my main goal," Ellenberg said. "They were having so much fun, I wanted to be out there. I hate not being out there."

When the second half started, Ellenberg quickly started having fun. She scored 13 of Oklahoma's first 14 points in the second half. Her jumper off an inbounds pass extended the Sooners' lead to 57-38 with 14:33 remaining.

"She makes it look effortless and she'll make you think that she's kind of just along for the ride," Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale said. "She really cares, it really matters to her and she came to play tonight. It was obvious."

Michigan (20-12) was making its first NCAA appearance in 11 years. The Wolverines closed to within 66-58 with 8:48 remaining thanks to Carmen Reynolds, who made 5-of-7 3-pointers and scored 20 points. However, the Sooners had no trouble closing out the victory.

"(Aaryn Ellenberg) is a phenomenal player," Michigan guard Courtney Boylan said. "She can stroke it, she can shoot it, and she can drive it. She can do everything. We tried our best to defend her and stop her as best as we could."

Michigan led the Big Ten in defense, allowing 58 points and forcing 17 turnovers per game. Oklahoma was averaging 17 turnovers per game but gave it away just eight times. The Sooners shot 49.3 percent from the field and had all five starters reach double figures.

"We got shots," Coale said. "When you don't throw it to the other team, you don't throw it out of bounds, you get a shot at the basket, good things happen."
