Three Athletes Honored in Final Weekly Tennis Awards

Three student-athletes have been recognized with Big 12 Tennis Player of the Week honors for their efforts in matches from April 16-22. On the men's side co-players of the week were chosen as Costin Paval (Oklahoma) and Gonzalo Escobar (Texas Tech) shared the honor, while for the second time this year Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar (Texas A&M) was awarded the women's distinction.

This is the second career accolade for Paval, after being recognized earlier this year on April 2. The Sooner becomes the first OU player two be recognized twice in one season. Before this season, Oklahoma only had two award winners over the previous nine years. Escobar takes home his first league honor and the first for the Texas Tech program since Raony Carvalho won on March 23, 2010.

Sanchez-Quintanar becomes the first Aggie to win two player of the week awards in a season since Elze' Potgieter accomplished the feat in 2009.

Big 12 Men's Tennis Players of the Week
Costin Paval, Oklahoma, Jr., Bucharest, Romania/Mincea Eliade
Paval took care of Oklahoma State's 107th-ranked Vlad Bondarenko at the No. 1 position (6-0, 6-0) as the Sooners posted a 6-1 victory over Bedlam rival to win the Big 12 regular season title outright. In that match, Paval and partner Dane Webb also won their doubles match at No. 1, 8-4.

This season, Paval, ranked No. 13, has held down the No. 1 positions in both singles and doubles for the Sooners, recording a 14-3 singles mark. He and Dane Webb, ranked No. 13, have accumulated 15 wins to only three losses in doubles action.

Gonzalo Escobar, Texas Tech, Sr., Manta, Ecuador/Julio Pierregoresse
Escobar used a third-set tiebreaker to topple No. 100 Daniel Whitehead at No. 2 singles, lifting the Red Raiders to a 4-3 win over No. 15 Texas. It was Texas Tech's first win over Texas since 2008. It also marks the first time in the history of the program that the Red Raiders have defeated Texas, Texas A&M and Baylor in the same season.

Escobar, who is the school's all-time winningest player, improved to 28-13 on the season, 14-8 in dual matches (3-2 Big 12). Escobar and Raony Carvalho, who are ranked 29th, topped the No. 30 Texas tandem of Chris Camillone and David Holiner, 8-5, to secure the doubles point for Texas Tech as well. The win gave Texas Tech the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Championship for the first time in the history of the event.
