Six Teams Earn NCAA Soccer Bids

Six Big 12 squads - the highest total for the league since 2008 - have been selected to the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.  No. 3 national seeds West Virginia and Texas Tech lead the way and are joined by Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas.

The six teams selected for this year’s Championship tie for the second-highest total in Big 12 history and its best since the conference began competition as a nine-team league in 2011.  The record for bids is eight in 2003 when the conference had 11 schools sponsoring the sport, followed by the six selections in 2008 and this year.   The six bids this season is tied for the third-most of any league in the nation.

All six Big 12 squads will host home games in the first round of NCAA competition - the second-most of any conference.  WVU will face Georgetown, which played the Mountaineers to a 1-1 tie back on September 12.  Kansas hosts nearby-rival Missouri for the first time since 2011.  The Jayhawks own a 10-9-1 advantage in the series against MU.

Oklahoma will host Arkansas in its first-round contest.  The Sooners are 7-0 all-time versus the Razorbacks and will be facing them for the first time since 2005.  Oklahoma State, which finished second in the Big 12 standings, hosts Arizona.  The two teams will be matching up for the first time.

Two school separated by less than a three-hour drive will face off when Rice travels to Texas.  The Longhorns hold a 2-1 edge against the Owls and will be playing them for the first time since 2006.  Texas Tech will welcome Prairie View A&M for just the second meeting between the schools.  The Red Raiders defeated the Panthers, 10-0, back in 2006.

First-round games will be played at campus sites November 14, 15 and 16. Second-round contests will be played Friday, November 21 at campus sites, with third-round games on Sunday, November 23 at the same campus sites. Quarterfinal games will be played November 28 or 29, also on campus.  The 33rd annual NCAA Women’s College Cup will be played December 5 and 7 at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla.
