Kansas City - The 2014 Big 12 Soccer Championships got underway Wednesday at Swope Soccer Village with a match between the top seeded West Virginia Mountaineers and the eight seeded TCU Horned Frogs.
The Mountaineers got off to a fast start, firing off seven shots on goal in the first half of the match. WVU saw its first real chance only six minutes in as Kate Schwindel fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was saved by Vittoria Arnold. West Virginia continued to attack, finding another scoring opportunity in the 21st minute when Cari Price fired a shot again from the top of the box that was saved by Arnold.
TCU went on the attack in the final 15 minutes of the first half, recording three shots and securing one corner kick. The Mountaineers finally broke through in the 43rd minute when Leah Emaus netted her fifth goal of the season after receiving a ball from teammate Ashley Lawrence.
West Virginia continued to attack and control possession as the second half got underway. The Mountaineers added another goal in the 67th minute when Michaela Abam connected on her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
TCU answered with a goal of its own following a penalty kick by Bobbi Clemmer in the 82nd minute, but the Mountaineers were able to hold on and secure the 2-1 victory.
West Virginia will play its semifinal match Friday, meeting either Texas or Texas Tech.
