Four Big 12 softball squads will continue their 2014 season in the NCAA Regionals held May 15-18. Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas earned bids for postseason play.
Coming off their third-straight Big 12 title, the Oklahoma Sooners will host Bryant, Hofstra and Texas A&M in Norman, Oklahoma. The Sooners ended the regular season on a 12-game win streak to go 45-10 on the year, marking the 21st-consecutive 40-plus win season. It is also OU’s 21st-straight trip to the NCAA Regionals. The top-ranked Sooners will take on Bryant Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
Baylor will host Northwestern State at 7 p.m. Friday at Getterman Stadium in Waco, Texas. The Lady Bears clinched a second place finish in the Big 12 after a 2-1 victory against Texas, May 6. Houston and Tulsa round out the quartet of squads in Waco.
In its 10th-straight NCAA tournament appearance, Texas will travel to Lafayette, Louisiana. Joining the Longhorns will be Mississippi State, Texas Southern with Louisiana-Lafayette hosting the regional. Texas finished the regular season in third place in the Big 12 with a 33-21 overall record and 12-6 in league play and will face Mississippi State Friday at 4 p.m.
For the first time since 2006, Kansas earned a bid to the championship race after finishing fifth in the Big 12 and No. 40 in the NCAA RPI rankings. The Jayhawks will travel to the Columbia Regional hosted by Missouri. Kansas will play Nebraska at 1:30 p.m. on May 16. Bradley rounds out the group of teams in Columbia.
The winners of the regionals will advance to the NCAA Super Regional round the following weekend with the ultimate goal of reaching the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
