Current Baseball Release in PDF
• Kansas, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas and Texas Tech have earned bids to the 2014 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship field. The Cowboys and Horned Frogs will serve as regional site hosts with TCU as a top eight national seed in the event (No. 7). Regional play begins on Friday, May 30, and runs through Monday, June 2 (if necessary). This marks the ninth time in the past 10 years that the Big 12 has had multiple institutions serve as regional hosts.
• The Big 12 finished the regular season with the second-best conference RPI in the nation, all nine of its teams in the NCAA RPI top 100 and six squads in the NCAA RPI top 40.
• The conference has earned five or more NCAA berths in all but three years since the league’s inception in 1997.
• The Big 12’s five selections ties for the third-most by one conference in this year’s event. Overall, the Big 12 has totaled 95 NCAA appearances and is 185-138 in Regional games, including an 18-8 mark over the last two years. The Big 12 has sent multiple teams to Super Regional action in 12 years, including each of the past four seasons. Additionally, the league has had 15 teams advance to the College World Series.
• Texas’ Mark Payton eclipsed Nick Martini’s Big 12 record for reached based streak. Payton has reached base in 95 straight games dating back to last season, which is two better than Martini’s streak from 2009-11. The senior Longhorn has reached base in all 56 UT games this season, making him three contests shy of matching Martini’s single-season mark of 59.
• Oklahoma State’s Brendan McCurry made his way onto the Big 12 career top 10 chart for saves with two in last week’s championship. McCurry sits tied for 10th at 26 total. He is the only OSU player on the list.
• TCU’s Tyler Alexander and Preston Morrison both threw complete games in last week’s Big 12 Championship as the Horned Frogs posted a 2.25 ERA at the event. It marked just the fourth time two pitchers from the same team tossed complete games in the same year at the tournament. Morrison is tied with KU’s Frank Duncan atop the CGs mark for active players with six.
• With 13 Big 12 wins this season, Texas head coach Augie Garrido finished the season with 300 career conference wins and is the only coach to achieve the feat.
• Six Big 12 teams have appeared in the national rankings this season with four league squads earning rankings heading into NCAA postseason play - Oklahoma State (No. 7), TCU (No. 9), Texas (No. 20) and Texas Tech (No. 23).
