Big 12 Quartet Earns Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Recognition

A pair of Texas Tech players (Dylan Dusek and Stephen Smith) along with Oklahoma’s Sheldon Neuse and TCU’s Tyler Alexander have been named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team by Collegiate Baseball News.

Neuse completed his first season as a Sooner as the only player to start all 58 games. He hit in the middle of the order, primarily third, for the entire season. A .304 hitter, Neuse was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and was a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First Team. He led the Sooners with 47 RBI and a .521 slugging percentage on 17 doubles, seven triples and seven home runs. Neuse’s seven triples are a freshman record at Oklahoma, while his 73 hits and 43 runs scored both rank third among Sooner freshmen.

Alexander, a left-hander, was a second team All-Big 12 selection and currently ranks fourth in the league with a 1.94 ERA. He owns a 10-3 record in 18 games. He has two complete games, both of which came in postseason play. His first was in the Big 12 Championship game, which gave TCU its first conference title in the league. His second complete game was against Sam Houston State to win the Fort Worth Regional.

Dusek, who was named the Coral Gables Regional Most Outstanding Player, is ranked sixth in the league with a 2.08 ERA. He is undefeated at 7-0 and has allowed just 16 earned runs in 69.1 innings pitched. The Sugar Land, Texas, product has started 13 games for the Red Raiders on the year.

Smith has started 49 of Texas Tech’s contests this season and carries a .283 batting average into the Lubbock Super Regional. His .420 on-base percentage is the fifth-best in the Big 12, while his 36 walks ties for seventh. He also has 12 doubles, 20 RBI and a .400 slugging percentage on the season.

The Big 12 has totaled 79 Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America selections since 1997.
