PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Aaron Dodson, Baylor, So., 1B/C, Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair
Dodson hit .500 (8-for-16) in four games with five runs, three doubles, one triple, one RBI, 13 total bases, an .813 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage last week for the Bears. In Wednesday’s win over Northwestern State he went 2-for-4 with two runs and a double. On Friday at Cal State Fullerton, he went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, one triple and one RBI in the second game of a doubleheader. On Saturday at Cal State Fullerton, he went 3-for-5 with a run scored. His back-to-back career-high three-hit games marked his team-leading fourth and fifth multi-hit games – he’s had those five multi-hit efforts in seven games played this season as he missed the first week due to injury.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Michael Freeman, Oklahoma State, Sr., LHP, Broken Arrow, Okla./Eastern Oklahoma State
Freeman had a career day for Oklahoma State to pitch the 10th-ranked Cowboys to a 5-0 win over Western Illinois last Sunday in Auburn, Ala. The senior southpaw worked eight innings and racked up 10 strikeouts, both career highs, to improve to 2-0 on the season. After WIU’s leadoff hitter reached on an error to open the game, Freeman retired the next 23 batters in a row, striking out two batters in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. WIU finally broke up Freeman’s no-hit bid with two outs in the eighth inning on a slow dribbler down the third base line that Freeman fielded but was unable to get the out at first. The Leathernecks’ only other hit of the game was a single up the middle by the next batter. In his eight scoreless innings, Freeman did not issue a walk and faced just two batters over the minimum. He threw 113 pitches, 78 of those for strikes. Freeman’s previous career long outing was five innings, while he also topped his previous best of seven strikeouts.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Justin Arrington, Baylor, Jr., SS, Plano, Texas/Hill JC
Arrington hit .417 (5-for-12) in four games with one run, one double, four RBI, six total bases, a .500 slugging percentage, one walk, a .462 on-base percentage and one steal. In Wednesday’s win over Northwestern State, he went 1-for-4 with a run, RBI and steal. In the first game of a doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton, he went 2-for-2 with an RBI, walk and double. In the second game, he went 1-for-3. In Saturday’s finale, he went 1-for-3 with two RBI to extend his on-base streak to seven games and hitting streak to five.
