Waco, Texas - Oklahoma and Kansas State opened the 2015 Big 12 Championship with wins at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco. The seventh-seeded Sooners bested No. 10 West Virginia, 4-0, while the No. 9 Wildcats took down No. 8 Iowa State, 4-1.
Oklahoma, ranked No. 41 in the nation, made quick work of the doubles point, securing a 1-0 lead right off the bat. The pairing of Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi posted a 6-0 win, followed by Abbi Melrose and Christiana Brigante’s 6-2 victory.
At No. 1 singles, Miyzaki, a freshman, stretched the Sooner lead to 2-0 with a straight set win (6-1, 6-2) over West Virginia’s Kaja Mrgole. Malene Stripp followed suit, and took the first set of her match with Carolina Lewis, 6-4 before a dominant 6-0 second set. Melrose finished off the job, taking down WVU’s Ikttesh Chahal 6-2, 6-4. The Sooners advance to face Texas Tech, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, at noon on Friday.
Iowa State jumped out to a 1-0 lead over K-State, with doubles wins from Alejandra Galvis and Caroline Andersen (6-1), as well as Meghan Cassens and Ana Gasparovic (6-4). The tide turned a K-State purple once singles play began however, with Wildcat players winning five of the first six sets.
At No. 5 singles, Maria Panaite got K-State on the board first with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Natalie Phippen. The No. 1 singles match broke the 1-1 tie in short order, as Carolina Costamagna took down Iowa State’s Sami Budai 6-3, 6-2. Iva Bago followed suit with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 position. Livia Cirnu finished the match off in style, winning 7-6, 6-4 with an ace to clinch the match.
Kansas State advances to take on No. 1 seed Baylor, the host school, at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Bears are ranked No. 8 nationally, and won the two teams’ previous meeting, 4-0 on April 19, as BU clinched the Big 12 regular season title.
Championship action continues on Friday for the women with four quarterfinal matchups. The league's men's squads open tournament play tomorrow with two quarterfinal matches. Matches will begin at 9 a.m. CT.
