Baylor Women, Oklahoma Men Crowned Big 12 Champions

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

WACO, Texas – The Oklahoma men and the Baylor women were crowned Big 12 champions on Sunday. It is the third Big 12 Championship for the Sooners in school history, all coming in the last four years. Baylor claims its second-consecutive women’s title and the eighth in school history.

On the women’s side, top-seeded Baylor claimed 4-0 victory over the second-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders. Throughout the championship, the Lady Bears never dropped a match, making for a cumulative score of 12-0. It is just fourth time a team has rolled through the Big 12 Championship without dropping a match.

In doubles, the Lady Bears got victories from their No. 2 and No. 3 teams, with a 6-3 victory from Kiah Generette and Blair Shankle over Sarah Dvorak and Katelyn Jackson at No. 3 to clinch the first point of the match.

Ema Burgic, ranked No. 22 in the country, gave Baylor a 2-0 cushion, finishing first in singles with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Kenna Kilgo at the No. 1 position. At No. 3 singles, Blair Shankle put the Lady Bears on the brink of a title, pulling out a hard-fought second set to take down TTU’s Sarah Dvorak 6-2, 7-5. Theresa Van Zyl put it away with a 6-2, 7-5 win at the No. 5 position over Sabrina Federici.

On the men’s side, Oklahoma rallied to take the doubles point with wins from their No. 2 and No. 3 squad. The Baylor pairing of Julian Lenz and Diego Galeano, ranked No. 18 nationally, had given the Bears an edge with an early 6-1 victory. Jose Salazar and Axel Alvarez Llamas knotted things at 1-1, before the Oklahoma No. 2 pairing of Dane Webb and Spencer Papa sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 victory.

In singles action, the Sooners dominated early, with wins from the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Oklahoma’s Axel Alvarez Llamas, ranked No. 2 nationally, won his highly anticipated match-up with top-ranked Julian Lenz in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

The Oklahoma lead was extended to 3-0 when Andrew Harris, ranked No. 5 nationally, took down No. 33 Tony Lupieri, 6-4, 6-4. However, with the Sooners just one match from the title, the Bears made a furious rally with the Hurd Tennis Center crowd at their backs.

Baylor’s Max Tchoutakian started things off with a 7-6, 6-3 upset of No. 35 Dane Webb to give BU life and cut the deficit to 3-1. Diego Galeano added to the mounting Baylor momentum with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Oklahoma’s Alex Ghilea, who is ranked No. 84 nationally. Mate Zsiga continued the furious comeback, and pulled Baylor even at 3-3 with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 win over Spencer Papa at the No. 5 position.

All eyes then turned to Court 6, where Oklahoma’s Florin Bragusi and Baylor’s Felipe Rios would decide the championship. Following a 6-4 win in the first set for Bragusi, Rios bounced back to save the match with an 8-6 win in tiebreaker to take the second set, 7-6. Bragusi took a 5-4 lead in the second set, and was able to get a break on a double fault, clinching Oklahoma its third Big 12 Championship title since 2012.

The Oklahoma men and Baylor women both earn automatic berths to the NCAA Team Championships. Big 12 teams will wait for the NCAA Championship brackets to be released on Tuesday, April 28. The selection show will be streamed live on NCAA.com, with the women’s bracket released at 4 p.m. CT and men’s and 4:30 p.m.
