West Virginia notches four swimming and diving athlete of the week awards after posting two wins to kick off the season. Sophomores Merwane El Merini and Julia Calcut are joined by junior Michael Proietto and senior Emma Skelley to earn the first batch of weekly honors.
BIG 12 MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Merwane El Merini, West Virginia, So., Marseille, France
- Claimed seven first place finishes, tallying three individual wins and four as part of relay teams in both the West Virginia State Games and in the Big 12 versus Big East battle where he beat out swimmers from Seton Hall and Xavier.
- Recorded a 50-meter freestyle time of 20.69, good for 23rd in the nation.
- Touched the wall less than one second ahead of the second-place finisher on two occasions.
BIG 12 WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Emma Skelley, West Virginia, Sr., Manassas, Va.
- Set a WVU Natatorium record in the women’s 1,650-meter freestyle, winning the race with a career-best time of 16:56.11 and besting the previous record by 3.21 seconds.
- Posted top three finishes in four events, including three first place wins to help propell West Virginia to a meet victory over Big East representatives Seton Hall, Xavier, and Butler.
- Holds the third-best time in the nation this season after her 1,650-meter freestyle performance.
BIG 12 MEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK
Michael Proietto, West Virginia, Jr., Aston, Pa.
- Won both events versus Seton Hall with NCAA Zone-qualifying scores of 361.35 on the 1-meter and 315.07 on the 3-meter.
- Pulled in a 1-meter score that was more than 60 points higher than the next-best dive.
- Earned second place in the 3-meter event at the West Virginia State Games with a score of 280.88.
BIG 12 WOMEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK
Julia Calcut, West Virginia, So., Zeeland, Mich.
- Opened the year with victories on the 1- and 3-meter boards in back-to-back weekends, winning each by at least 20 points.
- Swept Seton Hall with NCAA Zone-qualifying scores, recording a 316.58 on the 1-meter and a 282.97 on the 3-meter.
- Notched a 57-point victory over in-state rival Marshall on the 1-meter and won by more than 40 points on the 3-meter.
